Growing up in Lake Forest, Illinois, Bob attended Deerfield Shields High School before graduating from Lake Forest High School.

Entering Lake Forest in the late 1930s, his studies were interrupted in 1941 when he was called to military duty.  He returned to Lake Forest in 1945 and compiled three varsity letters in basketball and football and two in baseball.  Bob, a member of Kappa Sigma, was also awarded the Emery Free Throw Trophy for the highest free throw percentage.  In baseball he led the team in hitting in 1939 with a .414 average.  He was also a member of the 1938 undefeated, untied football team.

Graduating with a history degree, Bob embarked on a 32-year career in coaching and teaching.  He served his alma mater as assistant football coach for one year before accepting a position at University School in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.  He led his basketball team to three straight championships.  In 1954 he moved to California and did graduate work at San Francisco State University, Sonoma State University and the University of California.  He also took a position in the Mill Valley School District in California, where he served as a teacher and assistant principal for 25 years, retiring in 1979.  He has been a member of California Teachers Association and the National Education Association.
