WOMEN 4TH, MEN 8TH AT CONCORDIA INVITE
Led by junior Sarah Simpson's (Colorado Springs, CO) 10th place finish, the Lake Forest women took fourth place out of 11 teams at the Concordia University Invitational in Mequon, WI while the men's team finished 8th out of 12 teams.
Simpson ran the second fastest time of her career (20:56), just seven seconds off her best time, and the 20th fastest five-kilometer time ever for a Lake Forest woman. A pack of Forester runners followed close behind Simpson, led by Michelle Murillo (Des Plaines, IL) who finished 17th with 21:49. Four other runners finished 20th-26th. "Our three through six runners have been the same individuals each race but have finished in a different order each time," Head Coach Mike Wajerski commented. "For the team to be successful, those four need to work together and push each other during the race."
The men's team, with four of their five runners running their first collegiate five-mile race, were led by rookies Rob Bahde (Plainfield, IL) and Eric Crawley (Braintree, MA) who became the third and fourth Foresters to run their initial 8K race under 30 minutes. Teammate Joe Zemaitis (Scottsdale, AZ), held out of the race due to injury, accomplished the feat last year. Overall, Wajerski is pleased with the progress of his men's team, "We are significantly faster than where we were at this point last year and should improve even more as we get healthier."
Lake Forest will compete in the Carthage College Invitational next Saturday, September 25th.
