FORESTER WOMEN, ZEMAITIS BRING HOME FIRST PLACE FINISHES
After a 1998 season in which the Lake Forest cross country team went to the regional meet, hosted a cross country meet and produced Academic All-Americans for the first time in school history, second-year Head Coach Mike Wajerski was looking for a different kind of first.  He didn't have to wait long into the 1999 season.  In their season-opening meet, the Forester women's cross country team took first place at the four-team Benedictine Invitational and sophomore Joe Zemaitis did what no Forester has previously accomplished - won a cross country meet.

Junior Sarah Simpson led a group of six Forester women who finished in the top ten.  Simpson's time of 13:36 placed her third in the 2-mile race.  It was the second consecutive race that Simpson was the top Forester finisher.  She also was the first Lake Forest runner to cross the line at last year's regional meet.
Joining Simpson in the top ten was junior Michelle Murillo (5th), freshman Jill Henricks (7th), freshman Jillian Hibler (8th), freshman Melissa Brown (9th) and sophomore Jennifer McGuire (10th).  It was the first collegiate cross country meet for Henricks, Hibler, Brown and freshmen Molly Sutherland and Kat McCauley.  Hibler, a newcomer to the sport who ran her first-ever meet, was named the Forester Runner of the Week by Coach Wajerski.  The Forester's 32 points bested second place Benedictine by 7 points.
During the 3.25-mile men's race, sophomore Zemaitis became the first Forester, male or female, to win a meet.  Chris Guillan's third place finish on October 25th, 1997 was the previous highest male finish.  Zemaitis covered the course in 17:41 and was named the Forester Runner of the Week.  Freshman Eric Crawley, running in his first collegiate meet, finished eighth with a time of 19:24.  Freshman Rob Bahde and sophomore Naresh Kavuri also ran their first cross country meet.
As a team, the Lake Forest men finished third behind Concordia-River Forest and North Park.
The Foresters' next action will be at the Tom Barry Invitational, hosted by fellow Midwest Conference member St. Norbert.
