Inducted 1990 Growing up in Lake Forest, Ernie graduated from the first Lake Forest High School class in 1936 and was a member of the baseball, golf, and rifle teams. He entered Lake Forest College that fall but stayed only two years. He went to work for the U.S. Post Office before entering the U.S. Navy. Following World War II Ernie returned to Lake Forest College and earned one letter in golf and played two years of baseball. He was instrumental in creating the varsity golf program in 1947. Captain of the golf team his senior year, he lead the team to a CCI conference championship with a 75 average. An economics major, he was also a member of Kappa Sigma and the Golf Club. Graduating in 1947, he returned to the Postal Service before he earned a Master's degree in Education-Administration from Northern Illinois University in 1960. His teaching, coaching and administrative career spanned 40 years, including acting as principal at East School in Lake Bluff. Along with serving as the Civilian Athletic Director at Ft. Sheridan, where he was also instrumental in developing the Ft. Sheridan golf course, he served as golf coach at the College of Lake County and officiated numerous sports for 49 years. A Navy Reservist, he served as president of the Illinois Chapter of the National Ice Hockey Officials Association. Since 1967, Ernie has been an active member of the Shoreline League Old Timers Baseball team, a group he was president of and organized. In his late seventies, he continued to play and umpire baseball.
