Inducted 1976 Growing up in Lake Forest, Elmer attended Deerfield Shields High School and participated in baseball and basketball. He earned All-Conference honors in basketball on a team that advanced to the Sweet Sixteen in the Illinois State Championships. Entering Lake Forest in 1935, he eventually earned seven varsity letters, three in basketball and four in baseball. He captained the basketball team during his junior year and was starting pitcher for the baseball team. Student Council president, he was also a member of Alpha Sigma Kappa, the Stentor, the L.F. Club, and served as president of the Intra-fraternity Council his senior year. For his accomplishments he was elected to Iron Key and was listed in Who's Who in American Colleges. Graduating with a degree in history and English, he enlisted in the Navy in 1941. He served in three wars until he retired as captain in 1973. His numerous military awards include the Legion of merit and Meritorious Service Medal. Following his naval career, Elmer served as director of purchasing for Lake County until he retired in 1983. His service to his alma mater has been extensive, including class agent, life member of the Alumni Board of Directors, and Reunion Chair. In 1983 he received the Edwin L. Gilroy Award in recognition of his outstanding service to the College. Elmer has also served his community, in the Knights of Columbus, Lake County United Way, St. Mary's Church, and the Veterans Administration Hospital.
