Floyd A. "Duke" Gates '42
Growing up in Joliet, Illinois, Floyd attended Joliet High School where he was an outstanding performer in basketball and football. As a senior he received All-Conference  honors in football and participated on a state championship basketball team.  As a sophomore, he scored 46 points in the first round of the state tournament.

He entered Lake Forest in 1938 and in four years earned nine varsity letters, three each in football, basketball and baseball.  An excellent place kicker and running back, he led the football team in scoring as a senior captain, was a top scorer in basketball and one of the leading hitters in baseball.  Recipient of the Emery Trophy for best free throw percentage, Duke was also a member of Digamma Alpha Upsilon and the L.F. Club.

Following graduation he married Bonnie McAlister '43 and then joined the U.S. Navy.  After receiving an Ensign's Commission he served aboard the U.S.S. North Carolina, seeing combat duty in the Pacific theater from late 1942 until the end of the war in 1945.

After his discharge from active duty, Floyd entered the petroleum industry and worked for Mobil Oil Company for twenty-six years before retiring and venturing into the service credit business and establishing his own company.
