LAKE FOREST, IL -  The Forester football team took advantage of the opportunity to finish in the top half of the Midwest Conference by defeating Carroll College 15-9 at home on Saturday (November 10th). While the team will play one more game this season against MWC foe Monmouth College, it will not count in the league standings. Lake Forest finishes the conference season with a 4-4 record and in fifth place in the ten-team league.

Leading the way on offense against Carroll was sophomore running back Adam Niles (Lake Villa, IL/ Antioch), who rushed 23 times for 95 yards, including 7 carries for 51 yards on the game's final drive, when the Foresters ran out the final 4:15 on the clock to preserve the win. Lake Forest ran for a season-high 161 yards in the victory.

Sophomore quarterback Don Lackey (Lindenhurst, IL/Antioch) completed 14 of 27 passes for 118 yards and a touchdown. It marked the seventh time in eight games that the signal-caller has connected on at least half his pass attempts. Lackey needs just 12 more completions, 200 more yards and one more touchdown pass to match the best single-season totals in the program's history.

Defensively, junior linebacker Casey Urlacher (Lake Bluff, IL/Lovington-NM), sophomore linebacker Gary Wojdyla (Villa Park, IL/Willowbrook) and sophomore defensive back Pat Gillihan (Leawood, KS/Blue Valley North) each reached double-digits in tackles with 15, 12 and 10, respectively. Junior defensive back Colin Longworth (Ypsilanti, MI/Ypsilanti) intercepted his first pass of the season at the Forester 6 yard line and returned it 20 yards to end a Carroll first-half drive.

A Carroll field goal was the only score of the first half. The Foresters finally got on the scoreboard on their second drive after halftime, which covered 55 yards in eight plays and ended with Urlacher scoring the first offensive touchdown of his career on a quick lateral pass from Lackey.

Carroll regained the lead early in the fourth quarter but the extra point attempt was wide right, leaving them just two points ahead at 9-7.

On the ensuing drive, Lake Forest went 65 yards in 7 plays and Lackey connected with junior Jason Arendsee (Baraboo, WI/Baraboo) on a 13-yard touchdown pass to put the home team back on top. The two-point conversion was successful and the Foresters led 15-6.

Sophomore defensive back Otu Henshaw (Los Angeles, CA/Brentwood School) forced a Carroll fumble and sophomore linebacker Jim Letz (Chicago, IL/Mt. Carmel) recovered it to end Carroll's next drive, which had reached the Forester 20 yard line. After a Lake Forest punt, Carroll turned the ball over on downs and the Foresters ran out the final 4 minute and 15 seconds until the final gun sounded.

Lake Forest will host Monmouth College next Saturday (November 17th) at 11:00 am. A victory over the Fighting Scots would give the Foresters a 5-5 record and their second season at or above .500 since 1986. Their 4-4 league record is also the school's best in 15 years.
