David Bleitner is the MWC Defensive Player of the Year.
LAKE FOREST, IL - The 2003 All-Midwest Conference football teams were released Tuesday (November 18) and a dozen players from Lake Forest made the list. Three of the 12 were named to the first team, three to the second, and six were honorable mention selections.

All three first team selections were on the defensive side of the ball, where the Foresters ranked second in the league in scoring, rushing, passing, and overall. Junior defensive end David Bleitner (St. Louis, MO/Vianney), who set school records and was listed among the national leaders with 15.5 sacks and 26 tackles for loss, was named MWC Defensive Player of the Year. Senior safety Pat Gillihan (Leawood, KS/Blue Valley North) and junior linebacker Omar Pickering (Mount Vernon, NY/Port Chester) were First Team selections for the second straight year. Pickering was third in the conference with 103 tackles in nine league games. He also forced four fumbles in MWC play, twice as many as the next player on the list. Gillihan was third on the team with 75 tackles on the season and had a pair of interceptions and three fumble recoveries.

Junior offensive lineman Troy Paulsen (Des Plaines, IL/Maine West), senior defensive lineman Tom Starnicky (Oak Lawn, IL/Marist), and junior safety Drew Holman (Morris, IL/ Morris) were all second team selections. Paulsen and Starnicky were each honorable mention selections last season and each played in every game this year. Starnicky ranked fifth on the team and led the squad's defensive linemen with 66 tackles on the year. He also picked off two passes, forced one fumble and recovered another. Holman tied a school record with three interceptions against Carroll College on October 25. He led the team with four interceptions on the season after setting a school record with seven in 2002. He is just four shy of the school record for interceptions in a career.

Senior quarterback Don Lackey (Lindenhurst, IL/Antioch), junior wide receiver Nick Hildreth (Lombard, IL/Willowbrook), and senior offensive lineman Ben Larkin (South Milwaukee, WI/South Milwaukee) were the team's honorable mention selections on offense. Lackey is the school's all-time leader with 5,556 passing yards and 1,000 attempts. Hildreth led the team with 41 receptions for 603 yards and four touchdowns. He ranks second in school history in career receptions and fourth in receiving yards. Larkin was also an honorable mention selection in 2001 and a first team choice last year.

Freshmen linebackers Ryan Gallegos (Plantation, FL/St. Thomas Aquinas) and Louis Bertuca (Chicago, IL/Fenwick) and freshman punter Justin Ellerman (Chicago, IL/Loyola) were also honorable mention selections. Gallegos was second on the team with 78 tackles and three interceptions. Bertuca was fourth on the squad with 70 stops and second with 5.5 sacks and 17 tackles for loss. Ellerman averaged 37.5 yards per punt and ranked second in the conference.
