Foresters Win School-Record Eighth Game of 2002
Victory leaves team one win away from MWC title

Pat Dunne made his first-ever attempt from 50+ yards.
LAKE FOREST, IL - The Lake Forest football squad put together an 18-point second quarter and kept the visitors from Lawrence University scoreless through three periods to record its seventh Midwest Conference victory against just one loss, and improve to 8-1 overall. It marks the first time in their history that the Foresters have won eight contests.

On the game's first play from scrimmage, junior Drew Holman (Morris, IL/ Morris) intercepted a pass from Lawrence quarterback Chris McGinley and returned it nine yards to the Viking 36 yard line. The Foresters followed with 25, 6, and 5-yard rushes from sophomore Garrett Silveira (South Hadley, MA/South Hadley) for the opening score. Silveira accumulated 46 of his 50 total rushing yards in the first half and carried the ball eight times on the afternoon. The Vikings blocked the extra point attempt and neither team could manage to put any more points on the scoreboard in the first quarter.

On Lawrence's second possession of the second quarter, sophomore outside linebacker Omar Pickering (Mount Vernon, NY/Port Chester) blocked a Viking punt, recovered the loose ball, and returned it eight yards to the visitors' 27. After back-to-back rushes totaling four yards by junior running back Adam Niles (Lake Villa, IL/ Antioch), junior quarterback Don Lackey (Lindenhurst, IL/Antioch) found sophomore wide receiver Nick Hildreth (Lombard, IL/Willowbrook) for a 10-yard pass play to advance the ball to the Lawrence 13. After two incomplete passes and a Niles four-yard run, senior kicker Pat Dunne (Palos Heights, IL/Marist) connected on a 26-yard field goal to give his team a 9-0 lead.

Holman picked off another McGinley pass to end the Vikings' next possession. The safety leads Lake Forest with five interceptions and is one pick away from joining three others tied atop the school record book for interceptions in a season.

The home team took over from their own 38 and, on third-and-13, Lackey found senior wide receiver Mike Fitzgerald (Aurora, CO/Kent) for a 28-yard pass. On the next play, Lackey faked a handoff but kept the ball himself and ran 13 yards for the score, his third rushing touchdown of the season.

On the ensuing Lawrence drive, senior linebacker Casey Urlacher (Lovington, NM/Lovington) notched the Foresters' third interception of the half and 20th of the year, leaving them two short of the teamn record. Urlacher, in his final game at Farwell Field, recorded his first interception of the year, led his team with 11 tackles, and added one more behind the line of scrimmage to extend his school record for career tackles for loss to 42.

On the following Lawrence offensive possession, junior defensive back Pat Gillihan (Leawood, KS/Blue Valley North) recovered a fumble at the Viking 22. A nine-yard pass to Fitzgerald, a Lawrence pass interference penalty, and two Urlacher rushes put the ball in the end zone with 23 seconds to play in the half. Lackey hit junior slot Nick Rossie (Deerfield, IL/Deerfield) for the two-point conversion to give the home team a 24-0 halftime lead.

A scoreless third quarter saw both offenses take the field just twice, resulting in a punt and a failed fourth-down play for each team.

Midway through the final period, Lawrence finally got on the scoreboard with a 15-yard rushing score, but the extra point try was unsuccessful.

After the Foresters recovered an on-side kick at their own 49, freshmen running backs Bill McMahon (North Andover, MA/Brooks School) and Andre Washington (West Palm Beach, FL/Benjamin) combined for 19 yards on five carries to advance the ball to the Lawrence 32, where Dunne lined up and sent an end-over-end 50-yard field goal, the longest in school history, creeping over the crossbar to give Lake Forest a 27-6 lead. The previous record was 47 yards, set by Tom Higgins in 1980.

Lake Forest travels to De Pere, Wisconsin next Saturday (November 9) to take on the St. Norbert College (9-0, 8-0 MWC). The Green Knights clinched at least a share of the conference title when they defeated Grinnell College on Saturday, but a Forester win would result in a shared league championship and the first-ever appearance in the NCAA Tournament for Lake Forest. Kickoff time is 1:00 p.m.
