LAKE FOREST, IL – The Lake Forest College football team suffered its second loss of the season on Saturday (October 1), a 34-0 decision against Monmouth College. The Foresters are now 3-2 overall and 2-2 in the Midwest Conference. Monmouth improved to 5-0 overall and 4-0 in the league.

Both teams’ opening two drives ended with punts and neither team scored in the first quarter. But the Fighting Scots intercepted a Lake Forest pass on the first play of the second period and returned it for a touchdown to post a 7-0 lead. The visitors added two more touchdowns and took a 21-0 lead into the intermission.

Monmouth added its fourth score of the afternoon with 9:16 to play in the third period, however sophomore safety Edward Kidd (Round Lake, IL/Buffalo Grove) blocked the visitors’ extra point try and the score was 27-0 after three periods. Kidd finished the afternoon with a game-high 11 tackles.

The Fighting Scots scored their fourth and final touchdown early in the final period. Lake Forest had five possessions in the second half, and four of them ended with punts. The Foresters came into the contest averaging over 316 total yards per game, but were held to 152 yards, with half of them coming on the ground. Freshman Kyle Wetzel (Sarasota, FL/Cardinal Mooney) led the team with 56 rushing yards on a dozen carries and senior Andre Washington (West Palm Beach, FL/Benjamin) finished with 31 yards on 14 attempts.

Junior quarterback Matt Mahaney (West Chicago, IL/Addison Driscoll) connected on seven of 15 passes for 69 yards. Senior wide receiver Jeff Huebner (Antioch, IL/Antioch) led the team in catches with three for 37 yards.

Defensively, after Kidd’s 11 tackles, juniors Louis Bertuca (Chicago, IL/Fenwick) and Ryan Gallegos (Plantation, FL/St. Thomas Aquinas) were next on the team with 10 and eight stops, respectively. Bertuca added a sack and 1.5 tackles for loss and Gallegos also recorded a stop behind the line of scrimmage.
