GRINNELL, Iowa - The Lake Forest College football team won 28-14 at Grinnell College on Saturday (October 13). The squad’s third straight victory raised its overall record on the year to 3-4 and evened its Midwest Conference mark at 3-3. The Pioneers fell to 1-6 overall and 1-5 in the league.

A 68-yard completion from senior Jeff Ziemnik (Oswego, Ill./Oswego) to classmate Tom Cirone (Chicago, Ill./Niles Notre Dame) on the game’s second play from scrimmage set up the Foresters’ first touchdown, a 1-yard run by junior Joe Plano (Chicago, Ill./Mt. Carmel).

Junior Matt Lawler (Chicago, Ill./St. Rita) recorded his team-high fourth interception of the year on Grinnell’s third offensive play. Ziemnik connected with freshman Pat Jarvis (Chicago, Ill./Mt. Carmel) on a 27-yard touchdown just four downs later, giving the visitors a 14-0 lead after four minutes of play.

Grinnell cut the lead in half early in the second period on a 29-yard touchdown pass but the Foresters responded with an 8-play, 47-yard scoring drive to make the score 21-7. Ziemnik and freshman Brock Stenberg (Grand Haven, Mich./Grand Haven) combined for 30 rushing yards on the drive and Plano scored again from a yard out.

The Foresters carried the 21-7 lead all the way into the fourth quarter before finally tacking on another touchdown. The drive started on the Lake Forest 7-yard line but Ziemnik converted one third down with a 20-yard run and another with a 23-yard completion to Jarvis before finding Cirone on a 41-yard touchdown pass.

The Pioneers returned the ensuing kickoff 84 yards for a touchdown but would get no closer.

Ziemnik finished the contest with a career-high 328 passing yards and now has 14 touchdown passes on the year, one shy of the school record he tied last season. Jarvis caught six passes for 112 yards, Cirone covered 121 yards on his four grabs, and sophomore Dan Carter (Arlington Heights, Ill./St. Viator) hauled in five passes for 88 yards. Stenberg led the team with 58 yards rushing.

The Forester defense was paced by sophomore Chad Zimborski’s (Waukesha, Wisc./Waukesha North) game-high 13 tackles. Lawler had 10 stops, sophomore Donovan Baldridge (St. Louis, Mo./Chaminade) recorded nine, and senior Tim Paulsen (Des Plaines, Ill./Maine West) made eight tackles, including a sack and three other stops behind the line of scrimmage. Senior Ed Kidd (Round Lake, Ill./Buffalo Grove) and sophomore Lorenzo Ramirez (Denver, Colo./Kent Denver) each intercepted a pass and registered six tackles.

Senior Justin Ellerman (Chicago, Ill./Loyola) averaged 42.6 yards on his five punts and is averaging 41.6 yards per boot this season.

Lake Forest will host Monmouth College Saturday (October 20) afternoon at 1:30. The game can be viewed live on the internet at www.midwestconference.tv.
