JACKSONVILLE, IL – The Forester football team fell to 4-3 on the season after dropping a 24-8 decision at Illinois College on Saturday (October 15). Lake Forest is now 3-3 in Midwest Conference play. The Blueboys raised their overall record to 3-3 and their MWC mark to 2-3.

The teams combined to punt on each of the game’s first three possessions. The Foresters then turned the ball over on downs at the Illinois College 27-yard line, setting up the game’s first scoring drive. The Blueboys traveled 73 yards in 10 plays and took a 6-0 lead 29 seconds into the second quarter. Twenty-nine of the final 37 plays of the first half started in Blueboy territory but Lake Forest was unable to get on the scoreboard.

The home team doubled the lead on its first drive of the second half. The Foresters’ three third quarter drives ended with two punts and an interception. Illinois College scored its third touchdown of the game on the first play of the fourth quarter to take an 18-0 lead. Lake Forest marched 61 yards in 15 plays on its ensuing possession but again came up empty after turning the ball over on downs at the 7-yard line.

After forcing the hosts to punt, however, the Foresters took advantage of good field position at the Blueboy 42 to score their only touchdown of the game. Junior quarterback Matt Mahaney (West Chicago, IL/Addison Driscoll) completed consecutive passes to three different receivers to reach the 3-yard line. After an incompletion and a two-yard run, sophomore fullback Brian Hurtuk (Rocky River, OH/St. Ignatius) plunged into the end zone from the one. Mahaney rushed for a successful two-point conversion and the deficit was cut to 10 with 6:02 left on the clock.

Illinois College sealed the victory with a five-play, 45-yard touchdown drive. The Foresters were stopped on fourth-and-14 at the Blueboy 29-yard line with 1:27 remaining and the home team ran out the clock.

Mahaney finished with 214 yards passing. Senior wide receiver Jeff Huebner (Antioch, IL/Antioch) caught a dozen passes for 140 yards and senior tailback Andre Washington (West Palm Beach, FL/Benjamin) led the visitors with 48 yards rushing on 10 carries.

Junior linebacker Louis Bertuca (Chicago, IL/Fenwick) recorded a team-high 10 tackles, including a sack and one other stop behind the line of scrimmage. He also forced a second-quarter fumble that was recovered by senior linebacker Soren Johnson (Ripon, WI/Ripon).

Lake Forest will be back at home next Saturday (October 22) afternoon at 1:30 against Carroll College.
