LAKE FOREST, Ill. - The Lake Forest College football team hosted and defeated Grinnell College 24-16 on Saturday (October 18). The Foresters raised their overall record to 3-4 and Midwest Conference mark to 3-3. The Pioneers fell to 3-4 overall and 2-4 in league play.

A week after scoring a rushing and receiving touchdown, Lake Forest sophomore running back Brock Stenberg (Grand Haven, Mich./Grand Haven) surpassed the 100-yard mark in both categories against Grinnell. He ran the ball 37 times for 174 yards and caught six passes for 112 yards in the contest and his 286 yards from scrimmage were 70 more than the Pioneers posted as a team. The Foresters finished with 427 yards, their highest total of the season.

Grinnell punted on its first possession and missed a 40-yard field goal on the second. The home team fumbled the ball away on its first drive but marched 78 yards in 18 plays on the second, which ended with a 1-yard touchdown run by senior Chris Tossing (Lake St. Louis, Mo./Wentzville Holt) 78 seconds into the second quarter. Tossing, a two-time Honorable Mention All-MWC defensive lineman, lineup up under center when the Foresters got inside the 5-yardline and scored his first career touchdown on a quarterback sneak on fourth-and-goal. Stenberg had 11 carries for 31 yards and caught a pass for 14 yards on the drive, which lasted more than nine minutes.

The Pioneers' next possession ended on the third play when Forester senior safety Matt Lawler (Chicago, Ill./St. Rita) intercepted his league-leading fifth pass of the season and 16th of his career.

Lake Forest had the ball for the next 6:31 before punting. Grinnell got on the scoreboard on a 12-play, 76-yard touchdown drive but missed the extra point attempt with 2:08 remaining in the second quarter.

The Foresters were forced to punt again with just 23 seconds left in the half, which ended with the home team leading 7-6.

Thanks mostly to a 63-yard reception by Stenberg, Lake Forest reached the 1-yardline before turning the ball over on downs to open the second half. After forcing a Pioneer punt, the Foresters took over on the Grinnell 37 and needed just four plays to reach the end zone. Three of the plays were rushes for a total of 17 yards by sophomore running back Ty Van Valkenberg (St. Louis, Mo./St. Mary), including the final three into the end zone to give Lake Forest a 14-6 lead. The score was preceded by a 20-yard completion from sophomore quarterback Geoff Sobey (Mt. Prospect, Ill./Prospect) to senior wide receiver Tim McNamee (Winter Haven, Fla./Winter Haven).

After a 13-play, 43-yard drive by Grinnell ended with a 24-yard field goal, the Foresters returned the favor with an 8-play, 43-yard drive that resulted in a career-long 41-yard field goal by sophomore Tim Gruzwalski (Oakland, Mich./Stoney Creek) with 51 seconds to play in the third quarter. Stenberg ran for 61 yards on the drive and actually reached the end zone on a 51-yard run, but only received credit for 46 yards because of an illegal block at the Pioneer 5-yardline.

Lake Forest forced the Pioneers to punt on their next two possessions before all but putting the game away with a seven-play, 64-yard scoring drive that ended with a 16-yard touchdown run by Van Valkenberg with 5:13 left in the contest. The first five plays of the drive were runs for a total of 26 yards by Stenberg and the score was once again set up by a completion to McNamee, this time for 22 yards.

Grinnell pulled to within 24-16 on a nine-play, 60 yard drive that ended with 2:19 left on the clock. Junior cornerback Hamid Khan (Chicago, Ill./Loyola) recovered the ensuing onside kick and Stenberg ran three times for 10 yards to get the one first down the Foresters needed to clinch the victory.

Sobey completed 15 of 22 passes for 221 yards and Van Valkenberg rushed a dozen times for 61 yards and a pair of scores.. Junior wide receiver Dan Carter (Arlington Heights, Ill./St. Viator) caught three passes for 33 yards and now has 2,104 receiving yards in his career, 183 shy of the school record.

Junior defensive end Jaron Eanes (Cleveland, Ohio/Lake Forest Academy) and sophomore linebacker Tanner Compton (Excello, Mo./Macon) tied for the team lead with 10 tackles apiece. Both players had two tackles for loss. Lake Forest recorded eight tackles behind the line of scrimmage, including three sacks.

The Foresters will travel to undefeated Monmouth College next Saturday (October 25) for a 1:00 p.m. kickoff. A live video webcast of the game will be available at www.midwestconference.tv.
