LAKE FOREST, Ill. - The Forester football team fell 41-19 to visiting Monmouth College Saturday (October 20) afternoon. Lake Forest is now 3-5 overall this season and 3-4 in Midwest Conference play. The Fighting Scots raised their overall record to 5-3 and league mark to 5-2.

After punts on the game’s first three possessions, Monmouth scored on a 54-yard pass play to take a 7-0 lead. The contest’s next seven drives resulted in five punts and each team turning the ball over on downs once. The Scots finally extended their lead on a 36-yard field goal with 5:28 to play in the second quarter.

The Foresters’ first score came on the ensuing drive, which started at their own 36-yard line. Senior Jeff Ziemnik (Oswego, Ill./Oswego) passed for all 64 yards on the drive, the final seven on the scoring strike to sophomore Dan Carter (Arlington Heights, Ill./St. Viator) to make the score 10-7.

Monmouth made a 41-yard field goal with 42 seconds remaining in the half and led 13-7 at the break.

The Scots pulled away in the third quarter by returning the second half kickoff 86 yards for a touchdown and reaching the end zone again on their next possession to take a 27-7 lead.

The teams traded interceptions deep in Monmouth territory, the second by Forester sophomore Chad Zimborski (Waukesha, Wis./Waukesha North) at the 10-yard line. After a pair of running plays, Ziemnik connected with Carter on another touchdown pass from eight yards out. It was the single-season school record 16th touchdown pass of the year for Ziemnik and the school record 20th career scoring reception for Carter in just 18 games.

Lake Forest forced a punt and then embarked on a 13-play, 88-yard drive capped off by a four-yard touchdown run by Ziemnik, cutting the deficit to 27-19 with 12:14 to play in the game.

Monmouth, however, scored touchdowns on each of its next two opportunities and kept Lake Forest out of the end zone.

Ziemnik finished the game with 29 completions in 44 attempts for 301 yards, two touchdowns, and two interceptions. He also led the team in rushing with 86 yards on 20 attempts. Sophomore Will Christensen (Park City, Utah/Park City) caught seven passes for 92 yards and Carter had six receptions for 66 yards and the two scores.

Sophomore Lorenzo Ramirez (Denver, Colo./Kent Denver) led the Forester defense with seven tackles while freshman Brian Ruiz (Chicago, Ill./St. Patrick) and senior Ed Kidd (Round Lake, Ill./Buffalo Grove) finished with six apiece.

Senior Justin Ellerman (Chicago, Ill./Loyola) punted three times in the game for an average of 43.3 yards per boot, raising his average on the year to 41.8.

The Foresters’ final home game of 2007 is next Saturday (October 27) against Knox College at 1:30 p.m. The game can be viewed live on the internet at www.midwestconference.tv.
