Carter Brothers Lead Foresters to 12-8 Victory at Monmouth
Bertuca becomes program’s all-time leader in tackles for loss

Monmouth, Ill. - The Lake Forest College football team traveled to defending Midwest Conference champion Monmouth College on Saturday (October 21) and came away with a 12-8 victory. The Foresters are now 3-5 overall this season and 3-4 in league play. The Fighting Scots fell to 5-3 overall and 5-2 in the MWC.

Lake Forest’s offense was led by freshman wide receiver Dan Carter (Arlington Heights, Ill./St. Viator), who caught five passes for 139 yards and two touchdowns. Junior quarterback Jeff Ziemnik (Oswego, Ill./Oswego) completed 12 of 19 passes for 177 yards and the two scores and led the visitors with 33 yards rushing.

The Forester defense limited the leading rusher in the nation to just 67 yards on 20 carries in the contest. Senior linebacker Kevin Carter (Arlington Heights, Ill./St. Viator) led the unit with eight tackles and added a pair of interceptions. Classmate Louis Bertuca (Chicago, Ill./Fenwick) forced a fumble and recorded six stops, including 1.5 sacks. He also moved into first place in team history with 50 career tackles for loss.

Lake Forest reached midfield on the game’s opening drive before punting. Kevin Carter then recorded his first career interception at the Monmouth 23-yard line and the Foresters capitalized with a 19-yard touchdown pass from Ziemnik to Dan Carter on a fourth-and-six play. The extra point was blocked.

Following three more punts, the visitors doubled their lead on a 46-yard scoring pass to Dan Carter, which capped off a 70-yard drive. Monmouth blocked the extra point again.

Monmouth’s most significant threat of the first half came on its final possession of the second quarter but was thwarted by Kevin Carter’s second interception of the contest at the Forester 6-yard line.

The first five third quarter possessions ended with punts and the sixth, which extended into the fourth period, was blocked and recovered by Monmouth at the Lake Forest 41-yard line. Four plays later the Scots scored their only touchdown of the game and their two-point conversion attempt was successful.

Lake Forest reached the Scots’ 47-yard line before punting on its next possession. The began a stretch of 18 plays, spanning five possessions and consuming the game’s final nine minutes, that occurred on the Monmouth half of the field.

The Foresters will travel to Knox College next Saturday (October 28) for a 1:00 kickoff.
