Team is now 4-4 overall and 3-4 in MWC

Jeff Ziemnik caught four passes for 73 yards and tallied 85 yards on four kickoff returns.
LAKE FOREST, IL - The Lake Forest College football team was defeated for the fourth time this season, a 40-13 loss to Carroll College on Saturday (October 22). The loss dropped the Foresters’ overall record to 4-4 and the team is now 3-4 in the Midwest Conference.

Lake Forest managed to produce 183 total yards in the contest, with all but 20 coming via the passing game. Junior quarterback Matt Mahaney (West Chicago, IL/Addison Driscoll) finished the game with 15 completions on 25 attempts for 157 yards and a pair of touchdowns. Mahaney found senior wide receiver Jeff Huebner (Antioch, IL/Antioch) late in the second quarter for a 14-yard touchdown pass, then connected with sophomore Jeff Ziemnik (Oswego, IL/Oswego) with 10:23 to play in the third quarter for his second scoring pass.

Huebner finished the game with six catches totaling 50 yards. His first quarter touchdown marked his eighth of the year and the 15th of his career. Huebner is three touchdowns shy of matching the program’s all-time record for most career receiving touchdowns, which was set by Steve Kingman ‘71. Ziemnik caught four passes for a team-high 73 yards and accumulated 85 yards on four kickoff returns. Junior running back Devin Furlong (Lake Worth, FL/Cardinal Newman) led the team in rushing with 46 yards on 18 carries.

The Foresters dug themselves an early hole after a Carroll defender intercepted Mahaney’s first pass of the game and returned it 27 yards for a touchdown. The Pioneers then answered Huebner’s score with an 83-yard kickoff return for a touchdown with 34 seconds to play in the first half to post a 17-6 lead at the break. After Ziemnik’s touchdown catch cut the deficit to 17-13, the visitors responded with their second interception of the game and returned it for a touchdown, then added a field goal and a pair of scoring catches in the fourth to notch the 40-13 win.

The Lake Forest defense, which gave up 235 total yards, was led by senior linebacker Soren Johnson’s (Ripon, WI/Ripon) 10 tackles, with 1.5 of them occurring behind the line of scrimmage. Sophomore safety Edward Kidd (Round Lake, IL/Buffalo Grove) was next on the team with eight stops and classmate Tim Paulsen (Des Plaines, IL/Maine West) added four tackles, including a pair of sacks.

Lake Forest will battle Lawrence University (1-6, 1-6) on the road next Saturday, then will end the 2005 season at home on November 5 against St. Norbert College. The Foresters defeated Lawrence last year 27-0, but fell to St. Norbert 28-13 to close out the 2004 season.
