MONMOUTH, Ill. - The Forester football team was defeated 56-2 at Monmouth College on Saturday (October 25). Lake Forest fell to 3-5 overall and 3-4 in Midwest Conference play. The Fighting Scots raised their overall record to 8-0 with seven of the victories coming against leaugue opponents.

Lake Forest was forced to punt on each of its five first quarter possessions. Monmouth scored touchdowns on its first two drives, turned the ball over on downs on the third, and then reached the end zone again on the fourth and fifth to close out the period.

The Scots added a touchdown with 6:44 to play in the second quarter, making the score 35-0. After the Foresters punted and Monmouth turned the ball over on downs, completions to Lake Forest junior wide receiver Dan Carter (Arlington Heights, Ill./St. Viator) on three consecutive plays took the ball to the home team's 31-yardline. A deep pass was intercepted at the one two plays later, ending the visitors' best chance to score in the half.

The home team scored twice more in the third quarter to take a 49-0 lead.

The Foresters got on the scoreboard with 4:25 to play in the contest. Monmouth was forced to punt from its own 34-yardline. The snap was inaccurate and as the punter tried to pick up the ball, he was hit by Lake Forest senior safety Matt Lawler (Chicago, Ill./St. Rita). The ball bounced back into the end zone and was recovered by a Monmouth player for a safety. A Forester fumble recovered and returned for a touchdown on the next possession closed out the scoring.

The Lake Forest defense was led by senior lineman Chris Tossing (Lake St. Louis, Mo./Wentzville Holt), who finished the contest with a career-high 19 tackles, including 11 solos. Lawler had 10 stops, including one for loss, and three pass breakups. Junior linebacker Donovan Baldridge (St. Louis, Mo./Chaminade) and junior nose guard Rick Storkan (Pebble Beach, Calif./RL Stevenson) each recorded a sack.

Carter caught five passes for 54 yards in the game and is now 129 yards shy of the team record of 2,287 receiving yards set by Nick Hildreth in 2004.

The Foresters will travel to fellow MWC member Knox College next Saturday (November 1) for a 1:00 p.m. kickoff. A live video webcast of the game will be available at www.midwestconference.tv.
