WAUKESHA, WI - The Forester football team kept its chances for a Midwest Conference Championship alive Saturday (October 26) with an 18-0 victory at Carroll College. The Foresters' blanking of the Pioneers was the school's first shutout since a 6-0 win at Lawrence on October 28, 1989. Lake Forest is now 7-1 overall and 6-1 in Midwest Conference play.

Two of Carroll's first-quarter drives ended with punts and the other with an interception by senior Adam Nigh (Plymouth, WI/Plymouth), his first of the season. The Foresters punted on their first possession and had a field goal blocked after traveling 44 yards in 12 plays the next time they had the ball.

On Lake Forest's third drive, which carried over into the second quarter, the team went 71 yards in nine plays and got on the scoreboard with an 11-yard scoring pass from junior quarterback Don Lackey (Lindenhurst, IL/Antioch) to senior wide receiver Mike Fitzgerald (Aurora, CO/Kent).

Lackey finished the game with 20 completions in 36 attempts, 224 yards, the touchdown to Fitzgerald and no interceptions. The Foresters' signal-caller has completed at least one touchdown pass in all eight games this season and his 15 scoring strikes are two more than the previous school record.

Fitzgerald caught just four passes for 33 yards and the touchdown reception, his eighth of the season, matching the third-highest total in school history. With 1,293 receiving yards in his career, the team co-captain moved into fifth place in the school record books.

Carroll punted three more times and missed a 40-yard field goal in the second quarter. The Foresters went three-and-out on their next two possessions before finishing an eight-play, 54-yard drive with a 35-yard field goal from senior Pat Dunne (Palos Heights, IL/Marist) to take a 9-0 lead into halftime.

Both teams punted on their first possessions of the second half. Lake Forest fumbled the ball away on the first play of its second drive of the third period. Carroll was unable to take advantage, however, and missed another 40-yard field goal try. The visiting Foresters' took their next possession into the fourth quarter, eliminating more than six minutes off the game clock with a 16-play drive that ended with another fumble, this time at the Carroll three yard line.

Four plays later, sophomore linebacker Omar Pickering (Mount Vernon, NY/Port Chester) sacked Carroll's quarterback and jarred the ball loose. Senior linebacker Casey Urlacher (Lovington, NM/Lovington) picked it up at the three and stepped into the end zone for his second defensive touchdown in as many weeks and eighth score of the season (six rushing).

Dunne tacked on a 23-yard field goal with four minutes remaining for the game's final score. The squad's special teams captain now has 11 three-pointers on the year and 51 total points, the highest kicking total in school history.

Urlacher and Pickering tied for the team-lead in tackles on Saturday with 10. Four of Urlacher's stops were behind the line of scrimmage, giving the defensive captain 17 tackles for loss on the year and 41 in his career, a new school record. Five players recorded one sack each and junior Drew Holman (Morris, IL/ Morris) grabbed his team-high third interception of 2002. The two picks on Saturday give Lake Forest 17 on the year, matching the second-highest total in the program's history, five short of the 1979 team's school record of 22. The Forester defense held the home team to 183 total yards, including just 70 on the ground. Lake Forest is limiting its opponents to 66.6 rushing yards per game, the lowest average in school history by nearly 20 yards per contest.

On the offensive side of the ball, sophomore running back Adam Niles (Lake Villa, IL/Antioch) had a game-high 86 rushing yards on 20 carries. Fellow sophomore Garrett Silveira (South Hadley, MA/South Hadley) also added 48 yards on the ground as Lake Forest totaled 172 rushing yards and a season-high 396 yards from scrimmage. Sophomore Marty Quinn (Evergreen Park, IL/Mt. Carmel) led the team with five receptions for 79 yards, giving him 28 catches for 313 yards in the last four games.

The Foresters will host Lawrence University (0-8, 0-7 MWC) next Saturday (November 2) at 1:00 p.m. A win over Lawrence would give Lake Forest eight wins for the first time in its history and make the team's final regular season game at St. Norbert College (8-0, 7-0) the following Saturday (November 9) a contest to decide which team receives the MWC's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. St. Norbert can clinch at least a share of the league title with a victory on November 2 at Grinnell College.
