Lake Forest Comes From Behind to Win at Knox
Ziemnik runs for two touchdowns, throws for another

Jeff Ziemnik
Galesburg, Ill. - The Forester football team won 19-12 at Knox College Saturday (October 28) afternoon, raising its overall record on the year to 4-5 and its Midwest Conference mark to 4-4. The Prairie Fire fell to 2-7 overall and 1-7 in the league.

Junior quarterback Jeff Ziemnik (Oswego, Ill./Oswego) had a hand in each of the Foresters’ three touchdowns. He completed 17 of 30 passes for 251 yards and a touchdown and added 30 yards and two more scores on the ground. Junior Tom Cirone (Chicago, Ill./Niles Notre Dame) caught five passes for a career-high 93 yards and freshman Dan Carter (Arlington Heights, Ill./St. Viator) had three receptions for 57 yards and his 10th touchdown catch of the season.

Freshman linebacker Chad Zimborski (Waukesha, Wisc./Waukesha North) and junior safety Ed Kidd (Round Lake, Ill./Buffalo Grove) tied for the team lead with 11 tackles apiece. Kidd also intercepted a pass and forced a fumble. Junior linebacker James Werner (Oak Lawn, Ill./Marist) added 10 stops, freshman cornerback Lorenzo Ramirez (Denver, Colo./Kent Denver) recovered a fumble, and sophomore defensive lineman Chris Tossing (Lake St. Louis, Mo./Wentzville Holt) recorded his first career interception.

After a scoreless first quarter that included three turnovers and as many punts, the teams combined for four touchdowns in the second. The Prairie Fire scored the first, forced a fumble, and then extended their lead to 12-0 with 9:15 left in the half.

The Foresters responded with a seven-play, 65-yard drive that ended with Ziemnik running it into the end zone from nine yards out. After forcing Knox to punt, the visitors put together a six-play, 53-yard touchdown drive with a Ziemnik-to-Carter completion accounting for the tying score.

Lake Forest forced a pair of turnovers in the third quarter but punted the ball away on each of its possessions in the period. The first four drives of the fourth quarter also resulted in punts and Knox turned the ball over on downs at the Forester 27-yard line on the fifth. A 63-yard completion from Ziemnik to Cirone on the next play set up the winning score, a 1-yard run by Ziemnik on fourth-and-goal. The quarterback also kicked the extra point and Knox was unable to score in the game’s final 1:51.

The Foresters will close out the season at home against Carroll College next Saturday (November 4). Kickoff is at 1:00 p.m.
