LAKE FOREST, Ill. - The Lake Forest College football team was defeated 27-21 by visiting Beloit College on Saturday (October 4) in the Foresters' Homecoming Game. Lake Forest fell to1-4 overall this season and 1-3 in Midwest Conference play. The Buccaneers are now 3-2 overall and 2-2 in league play.

After forcing a punt to open the game, Lake Forest drove 47 yards in a dozen plays to take a 7-0 lead. Sophomore Ty Van Valkenberg (St. Louis, Mo./St. Mary) ran for two yards on fourth-and-two from the Beloit 4-yardline and then reached the end zone for the first time in his career on the next play.

The Buccaneers answered with a 46-yard kickoff return and 11-play, 42-yard touchdown drive of their own to tie the score and, after both teams committed turnovers, the opening period ended with the Foresters at the Beloit 8-yardline threatening to take the lead.

Lake Forest sophomore quarterback Geoff Sobey (Mt. Prospect, Ill./Prospect) completed a pass to junior Dan Carter (Arlington Heights, Ill./St. Viator) in the end zone on the first play of the second quarter, giving the home team a 14-7 lead. The score tied Carter with Tyrome Bembry for fourth in team history with 150 career points and third with 25 touchdowns. He also moved into third place in program history with 116 career receptions.

After the teams exchanged punts and turnovers, Beloit drove to the Foresters' 8-yardline before settling for a 26-yard field goal. The Buccaneers then forced another Lake Forest fumble, scored a touchdown at the end of a 6-play, 37-yard drive, and led 17-14 at halftime.

The Foresters punted on their first two possessions of the second half and Beloit extended their lead to 27-14 on a 3-yard touchdown carry and a 52-yard field goal. Both teams punted again and the home team faced a 27-14 deficit entering the final period.

The Foresters turned the ball over on downs at the Beloit 24 on their first drive of the fourth quarter and were intercepted in the end zone on the second possession. Sobey finished off the team's third opportunity with a 2-yard touchdown run, the first of his career.

Lake Forest recovered the onside kick and drove to the Beloit 12-yardline before another interception in the end zone with 1:13 remaining in the game all but clinched the win for Beloit. The Foresters forced a Buccaneer punt on the last play of the game but were unable to field it cleanly.

Carter finished the contest with a career-high 12 receptions for 97 yards and a score. He is now just 90 away from becoming the second player in team history with 2,000 career receiving yards. Sobey completed 20 of 30 passes for 178 yards with a touchdown and an interception.

Senior Chris Tossing (Lake St. Louis, Mo./Wentzville Holt) led the Forester defense with 10 tackles, including a pair of sacks. Junior Jaron Eanes (Cleveland, Ohio/Lake Forest Academy) recovered a fumble and senior Matt Lawler (Chicago, Ill./St. Rita) recorded his 13th career interception, moving him into sole possession of third place in school history.

Lake Forest will play at Lawrence University next Saturday afternoon (October 11). Kickoff will be at 1:00 and a live video webcast of the game will be available at www.midwestconference.tv.
