Lake Forest Celebrates Homecoming with 30-19 Triumph over Lawrence
Dan Carter catches two touchdown passes, throws another

Brock Stenberg
LAKE FOREST, Ill. - The Forester football team defeated visiting Lawrence University 30-19 Saturday (October 6) afternoon. The Homecoming victory gives Lake Forest a 2-4 overall record and 2-3 mark in Midwest Conference play. The Vikings fell to 1-4, both overall and in the league.

Lake Forest fumbled away the ball and Lawrence missed a long field goal attempt on the team’s first possessions of the game and both squads punted on their next try. The Foresters then got on the scoreboard first when sophomore wide receiver Dan Carter (Arlington Heights, Ill./St. Viator) took a lateral and threw the ball to senior wideout Tom Cirone (Chicago, Ill./Niles Notre Dame), who was wide open in the end zone, for a 39-yard touchdown.

The teams traded punts again before Forester sophomore defensive lineman Jaron Eanes (Cleveland, Ohio/Lake Forest Academy) blocked Lawrence’s third punt of the game and gave the home team the ball at the Viking 41. The Foresters reached the 5-yard line by the end of the first quarter and three carries by sophomore Joe Plano (Chicago, Ill./Mt. Carmel) eventually pushed the ball across the goal line for his second touchdown of the season.

Lawrence cut the lead to 14-7 on a 47-yard touchdown run and the teams both punted on their next possession. Senior quarterback Jeff Ziemnik (Oswego, Ill./Oswego) then connected with Carter on a 30-yard touchdown completion to make the score 20-7 in favor of the Foresters.

The Vikings scored on a field goal late in the second quarter and Lake Forest led 20-10 at halftime.

Lawrence punted on its first two possessions of the third quarter and the Foresters turned the ball over on downs and had a punt blocked on their two drives. The Vikings then finished the period deep in Forester territory but were forced to settle for a 27-yard field goal on the first play of the fourth period.

After a couple of punts, Forester sophomore Noah Dion (Cleveland Heights, Ohio/Cleveland Heights) capped off a 7-play, 57-yard drive with a 28-yard field goal, the first of his career, to give the home team a 23-13 advantage.

Lake Forest forced the Vikings to punt for the eighth time on the day and took the ball 80 yards in nine plays for the clinching touchdown, a 5-yard pass from Ziemnik to Carter.

Lawrence managed one more touchdown, capping off a 13-play, 62-yard drive. The ensuing onside kick was unsuccessful and the Foresters ran out the clock.

Lake Forest freshman Brock Stenberg (Grand Haven, Mich./Grand Haven) led the home team with 99 yards rushing on 21 carries. Ziemnik was 14-of-25 for 205 yards passing and a pair of touchdowns. He is now just three scoring passes shy of the single-school record of 15 that he tied last year. Carter, who finished the game with five catches for 111 yards and two scores, is now just one touchdown reception shy of the Foresters’ career record of 19.

The Lake Forest defense was led by sophomore defensive back Lorenzo Ramirez (Denver, Colo./Kent Denver) with nine solo tackles. He also broke up a pair of passes. Sophomore linebacker Chad Zimborski (Waukesha, Wisc./Waukesha North) was next on the team with eight stops and freshman defensive back Brian Ruiz (Chicago, Ill./St. Patrick) had seven. Freshman defensive lineman Marty LaBelle (Chicago, Ill./St. Patrick) recorded the team’s only sack.

Lake Forest senior Justin Ellerman (Chicago, Ill./Loyola) was credited with five punts for an average of 41.8 yards. He is averaging 41.4 yards per boot so far this year, which would give him the second-highest mark in team history.

The Foresters will play at Grinnell College next Saturday (October 13) at 1:30 p.m. The game can be viewed live on the internet by visiting www.midwestconference.tv.
