Foresters Fall Under the Lights at Lawrence
Lake Forest is back at home next week

Will Christensen
Appleton, Wis. - The Lake Forest College football team dropped its only night game of the 2006 season 22-6 at Lawrence University on Saturday (October 7). The Foresters fell to 1-5 overall and 1-4 in Midwest Conference play. The Vikings raised their overall record to 3-3 and their league mark to 2-3.

Freshman Will Christensen (Park City, Utah/Park City) led the visitors with 71 yards rushing and classmate Dan Carter (Arlington Heights, Ill./St. Viator) caught four passes for 78 yards and his team-high sixth touchdown pass of the season. Junior Tom Cirone (Chicago, Ill./Niles Notre Dame) paced the squad on Saturday with six receptions for 80 yards. Junior quarterback Jeff Ziemnik (Oswego, Ill./Oswego) was 15-for-33 with a touchdown and three interceptions.

Junior Ed Kidd (Round Lake, Ill./Buffalo Grove) and sophomore Matt Lawler (Chicago, Ill./St. Rita), the team’s starting safeties, led the Foresters with nine tackles each. Lawler also intercepted a pass, as did senior Keith Hanson (Fairfax, Va./Vermont Academy), who leads the squad with four this season.

The teams combined to punt five times, commit four turnovers, and turn the ball over on downs once in a scoreless first half of play.

Lawrence intercepted a pass on the first possession of the second half and returned it to the Forester 18-yard line. The Vikings scored the first touchdown of the game four plays later and took a 13-0 lead after a 70-yard scoring completion on their next drive. A 70-yard fumble return two Lake Forest possessions later gave the home team a 19-0 lead heading into the fourth quarter and the Vikings extended their advantage to 22-0 with a 25-yard field goal in the final period.

The Foresters finally got on the scoreboard when Ziemnik connected with Carter from 23 yards out. The score was set up by Kidd’s 51-yard kickoff return.

Lake Forest will return home next Saturday (October 14) to face Grinnell College. Kickoff is at 1:30 p.m.
