GRINNELL, IA - The Forester football team opened its Midwest Conference schedule with a 28-7 victory at Grinnell College Saturday (September 13) in cold and rainy conditions. The team is now 2-0.

For the second straight week, Lake Forest got on the scoreboard before its offense even touched the ball. After three Grinnell plays netted six yards, junior Marty Quinn (Evergreen Park, IL/Mt. Carmel) blocked the punt attempt and senior Pat Gillihan (Leawood, KS/Blue Valley North) picked up the loose ball and sprinted 34 yards for the touchdown. The Foresters pulled off a similar trick last Saturday when they recovered the ball after a bad snap to the punter and scored on Concordia's first possession.

Grinnell managed just two first downs in the first quarter. Junior Chris Polizzi (Great Barrington, MA/ Williston) blocked a field goal attempt to end the Pioneers' only scoring opportunity of the period.

The Foresters scored again on their first possession of the second quarter. Senior quarterback Don Lackey (Lindenhurst, IL/Antioch) completed a pair of passes to sophomore wide receiver Jeff Huebner (Antioch, IL/Antioch) and a nine-yard run by sophomore tailback Andre Washington (West Palm Beach, FL/Benjamin) advanced the ball to the Grinnell 5 yard line. Lackey handed the ball to freshman running back Anthony Guli (Buffalo Grove, IL/Stevenson) on consecutive plays to reach the end zone for Guli's first career touchdown. The extra point attempt failed and Lake Forest led 13-0.

Guli found the end zone for the second time in the game two Forester possessions later. Lackey passes to junior wideout Nick Hildreth (Lombard, IL/Willowbrook) for 12 yards and Quinn for 24 moved the ball to the Grinnell 7. After a holding penalty on the home team, Guli finally scored on his third carry from the 3 to give the visitors a 19-0 halftime lead.

After hours of rain soaked the field, Lake Forest head coach Chad Eisele elected to kick off to begin the second half. The move, obviously dictated by playing conditions, proved to be the right call when senior Brian Bonnell (Dixon, IL/Dixon) picked up a Grinnell fumble and returned it 41 yards to the Pioneer 1 yard line. Guli took care of the final yard for his third score of the day.

The Pioneers got their only score of the game on an interception return for a touchdown in the third quarter. Lake Forest added two points on a safety in the third to account for the final score.

Gillihan led the Forester defense with 11 tackles, including six solos and a sack. The unit forced five turnovers and the offense's average starting field position was its own 43 yard line.

Lake Forest will finally play its home opener next Saturday (September 20) against Beloit College, Kickoff is at 1:30 p.m. The Foresters rallied from an 11-point deficit at Beloit last year to win 24-23.
