Co-captains Pat Dunne (#7) and Mike Fitzgerald (#25) led the Foresters to a win at Beloit.
LAKE FOREST, IL - A pair of Forester football players, kicker/punter Pat Dunne (Palos Heights, IL/Marist) and wide receiver Mike Fitzgerald (Aurora, CO/Kent) were named Midwest Conference Players of the Week for their contributions to Lake Forest's dramatic 24-23 victory at Beloit College Saturday (September 21) night. Dunne, the team's kicker and punter, earned the conference's special teams honors while Fitzgerald was selected as the league's top offensive player for the week.

Lake Forest took an early lead on Dunne's first field goal of the evening, a 40-yarder on the team's second possession of the game. His highest-skilled maneuver of the game, however, came with just 1:58 remaining in the first half. Lake Forest had just scored a touchdown and trailed 16-9 when the senior co-captain aimed his kickoff directly at the feet of the nearest Beloit player. After the ball ricocheted off the Buccaneer, the Foresters fell on it. Seven plays later, Dunne connected on a 32-yard field goal.

Fitzgerald's sure hands have made him the quarterback's favorite receiver so far this year. On Saturday, his 18-yard score with 2:48 to play brought Lake Forest to within five points, but that was just the beginning of his heroics. On the ensuing kickoff, Dunne executed an onside kick to perfection and Fitzgerald pounced on the loose ball, keeping the Foresters' hopes for a victory alive. On the eighth play of the drive, the senior co-captain caught a short pass, found a gap in the middle of the field, and scampered into the end zone for a game-winning 28-yard touchdown. He finished the evening with 12 catches for 171 yards and the two touchdowns.

For the season, Fitzgerald leads the team with 24 receptions, 305 yards, and five touchdown catches.  It is still early in the season, but he is on pace to set school records in all three categories. Dunne is third on the team in scoring this year with 16 points (3/4 FG's, 7/8 PAT's) and has more field goals (19) and extra points (72) than any kicker in school history. The 129 points he has scored in his career are the fifth-most for any Forester.

Midwest Conference Players of the Week are chosen by the league's sports information directors.
