September 26, 2009 Contact: Mike Wajerski, SID Dan Carter Becomes Lake Forest's Career Receptions Leader in Loss to St. Norbert
The Foresters got on the scoreboard first on the game's second play from scrimmage. Junior Brock Stenberg (Grand Haven, Mich./Grand Haven) took the handoff and ran 67 yards to the end zone. He carried the ball a dozen times for a game-high 113 yards on the day. St. Norbert returned the ensuing kickoff to the Lake Forest 30-yardline and reached the end zone seven plays later to take a 7-6 lead and the teams failed to score again in the first quarter. The Foresters possessed the ball for 10:29 in the second quarter but were outscored 21-0 in the period and trailed 28-6 at halftime. Among Lake Forest junior quarterback Geoff Sobey's (Mt. Prospect, Ill./Prospect) 13 completions in the quarter was the 170th career reception for senior Dan Carter (Arlington Heights, Ill./St. Viator), making him the program's career leader in that category. He already held the school records for career receiving yards and touchdown catches. Neither team scored in the third quarter and the Green Knights opened the fourth with a touchdown drive to extend their lead to 35-6. An interception ended the next Forester possession but the home team got the ball back by stopping the Knights on 4th-and-1 at the Lake Forest 12-yardline. Freshman quarterback Justin Novak (Miami, Fla./Miami Coral Park) entered the game and was sacked 10 yards behind the line of scrimmage on his first play. He then completed seven of nine passes for 94 yards on the drive, including a 14-yard touchdown pass to sophomore Chris Carter (Arlington Heights, Ill./St. Viator). It was the first career score for both players and was followed by a pass from Novak to sophomore Josh Kabala (West Chicago, Ill./South Elgin) for a successful two-point conversion. It turned out to be the game's final score. The Foresters outgained the Green Knights 369-332 and forced four turnovers while committing just two. Sobey completed 19 of 34 passes for 183 yards and Novak connected on eight of his 12 pass attempts for 98 yards and a score. Chris Carter, who entered the game with just one career reception, led all players in the game with 10 catches and 127 yards. Kabala's six receptions and 56 yards were also career-highs. Sophomore safetyLuke Butts (Warrensburg, Ill./Warrensburg) and senior linebackerChad Zimborski (Waukesha, Wis./Waukesha North) tied for game-high honors with 10 tackles apiece. Butts also picked off a pass and recovered a St. Norbert fumble. Senior safety Will Christensen (Park City, Utah/Park City) recorded his first career interception. The Foresters will travel to Beloit College next Saturday (October 3) for a 1:00 p.m. kickoff. A live video webcast of the game will be available at www.midwestconference.tv.
