BELOIT, Wis. - The Lake Forest College football team won 44-36 at Beloit College Saturday (September 29) afternoon. The Foresters are now 1-4 overall on the season and 1-3 in Midwest Conference play. The Buccaneers fell to 0-5 overall and 0-4 in league play.

Lake Forest single-game records for touchdown passes and receptions were matched by junior Jeff Ziemnik (Oswego, Ill./Oswego) and sophomore Dan Carter (Arlington Heights, Ill./St. Viator), respectively. Ziemnik completed 18 of 26 passes for 272 yards and four touchdowns while Carter set career-highs with nine receptions, 164 yards, and three scores. Ziemnik also ran the ball 13 times for a team-high 61 yards and a touchdown.

Sophomore Chad Zimborski (Waukesha, Wisc./Waukesha North) led the Forester defense with 13 tackles and junior Chris Tossing (Lake St. Louis, Mo./Wentzville Holt) added 10.

After a 70-yard run by Ziemnik was called back because of a penalty, Lake Forest punted on the game’s first possession. Beloit then took a 7-0 lead on a 10-play, 76-yard drive. The Buccaneers picked off a Ziemnik pass on the visitors’ next possession and traveled 52 yards in 12 plays to make the score 14-0.

A Forester punt pinned the home team at its own 5-yard line early in the second quarter and a holding penalty in the end zone three plays later put the visitors on the scoreboard with a safety. Ziemnik then connected with Carter on a 42-yard touchdown pass to cut the deficit to 14-9. After forcing a Buccaneer punt, the Foresters covered 80 yards in 15 plays, the last a 5-yard touchdown run by Ziemnik. Beloit punted again on its next possession and Ziemnik capped off a 7-play, 71-yard drive with a 25-yard touchdown pass to senior Tom Cirone (Chicago, Ill./Niles Notre Dame) to give the visitors a 22-14 advantage with just 14 seconds to play in the half.

A 70-yard kickoff return gave the Bucs the ball at the Forester 20 with two ticks left on the clock and the home team converted a 37-yard field goal attempt as time expired.

Lake Forest rattled off 22 straight points again in the third quarter. Ziemnik connected on a 27-yard touchdown pass to Carter on the Foresters’ first possession and, after junior Matt Lawler (Chicago, Ill./St. Rita) picked off a Beloit pass and returned it 31 yards to the Buccaneer 37, sophomore Sam Kotler (Fountain Valley, Calif./Fountain Valley) capped off a 5-play drive with a touchdown run from two yards out. Ziemnik completed the two-point conversion attempt to freshman Pat Jarvis (Chicago, Ill./Mt. Carmel) to give the Foresters a 37-17 lead. The teams traded punts on the game’s next three possessions before Ziemnik connected with Carter again from 21 yards out to close out the Lake Forest scoring and give the visitors a 44-17 lead.

Beloit, however, did not go down without a fight. The Bucs scored on a 46-yard field goal early in the fourth quarter, sacked the quarterback in the end zone for a safety, and scored touchdowns on a 28-yard run and a 3-yard pass to cut the lead to 44-36.

Lake Forest was finally able to run out the clock on five straight carries by freshman Brock Stenberg (Grand Haven, Mich./Grand Haven), who finished the contest with 55 yards on 12 attempts.

The Foresters will play their Homecoming game next Saturday (October 6) against Lawrence University. Kickoff is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. The game can be viewed live on the internet by visiting www.midwestconference.tv.
