LAKE FOREST, Ill. - The Lake Forest College football team opened the 2008 season with a 35-13 loss to visiting Aurora University Saturday (September 6) afternoon. It was the first-ever meeting between the two programs.

The Foresters actually led 6-0 at the end of the opening period after sophomore quarterback Geoff Sobey (Mt. Prospect, Ill./Prospect) connected with junior wide receiver Will Christensen (Park City, Utah/Park City) for a 17-yard touchdown with 2:42 remaining in the period. Sobey completed 17 of 32 passes on the day for 200 yards and a pair of touchdowns. Christensen finished with six catches for 37 yards.

Aurora completed a 10-play, 57-yard touchdown drive early in the second quarter and crossed the goal line again on its next possession to take a 14-6 lead.

The next two Forester possessions looked promising before interceptions at the Aurora 18 and 24 yard lines thwarted scoring opportunities. The latter interception was returned 76 yards for a touchdown and the home team trailed 21-6 at halftime.

The Spartans scored again on their first possession of the second half to increase their lead to 28-6. Later in the third quarter, interceptions on consecutive plays moved Lake Forest from their 38 yard line to the Aurora 31. Senior Matt Lawler (Chicago, Ill./St. Rita) picked off the pass for the Foresters and returned it 37 yards. He now has a dozen interceptions in his career, tied for third in team history.

Sobey then connected with freshman running back Maurice White (Miami, Fla./Dade Christian School) for a 24-yard touchdown on fourth-and-three to cut the deficit to 28-13.

A fourth quarter touchdown by the visitors closed out the scoring. Any hope for a miraculous Forester comeback offically ended with the Spartans' fourth interception of the game - all in their territory - at the Aurora 2 yard line with 1:46 left in the contest.

Sophomore running back Brock Stenberg (Grand Haven, Mich./Grand Haven) led the Foresters with 80 rushing yards and junior wideout Dan Carter (Arlington Heights, Ill./St. Viator) finished with a game-high seven catches and 110 receiving yards. He now has 1,636 yards in his career and moved from fifth to third on the program's all-time list.

Lake Forest's defense was led by sophomore linebackers Tanner Compton (Excello, Mo./Macon) and Anthony Garetto (Orland Park, Ill./Marist), who each recorded 11 tackles, including two behind the line of scrimmage. Junior defensive lineman Jaron Eanes (Cleveland, Ohio/Lake Forest Academy) and junior linebacker Donovan Baldridge (St. Louis, Mo./Chaminade) added nine stops apiece.

Garetto also averaged 39.6 yards on seven punts in the game and booted one 69 yards to the Aurora 9.

The Foresters will begin Midwest Conference play next Saturday (September 13) at Ripon College. A live video webcast of the game will be available at www.midwestconference.tv.
