Lake Forest Falls to Chicago in Season Opener

LAKE FOREST - Dan Philips rushed for two touchdowns as a fullback, recorded seven tackles from his middle linebacker position, and blocked two kicks (one extra point and a punt) as University of Chicago avenged last season's 16-14 Lake Forest win with a 28-16 win at Lake Forest on Saturday (September 9th).

Chicago jumped out to a 14-0 first quarter lead behind two touchdown passes from Josh Dunn. One play after a Lake Forest fumble, Dunn hit Elias Miles in the end zone for a 32-yard touchdown. Dunn then connected with Brian Gutrob on a seven-yard scoring strike to close out the first quarter.

Lake Forest answered with two scores of their own in the second quarter. Junior wide receiver Andy Heikes (Palos Hills, IL/Stagg) scored the Foresters' first touchdown of the season off a 20-yard pass from sophomore quarterback Mike Sheehan (Sycamore, IL/Sycamore). Six foot, six inch freshman fullback Tom Starnicky (Oak Lawn, IL/Marist) scored on a nine-yard TD run with 1:33 left in the first half to pull Lake Forest within one point. Philips blocked the ensuing extra point and that would be as close as the Foresters would come.

Philips capped off a 13-play, 63-yard scoring drive with a two-yard touchdown plunge with 7:21 remaining in the third quarter. On the next drive Lake Forest responded with a long dive of their own, spanning 14 plays and 59 yards and culminating in a 41-yard Pat Dunne (Chicago, IL/Marist) field goal. Philips then gave the Maroons some insurance with 48 seconds in the game when he scored on a six-yard TD run, seven plays after a Lake Forest turnover. Three of Chicago's four touchdowns came after Lake Forest turnovers.

Dunn finished the day with 241 yards passing as he hit 15 of 36 with two touchdowns and no interceptions. He hit six different receivers, three of which had 57 yards or more.

Lake Forest threw for 181 yards and ran for 80 yards on the afternoon. Heikes finished with five catches for a game-high 80 yards and a touchdown. He also completed an end-around pass for 28 yards. Defensively, Casey Urlacher (Lake Bluff, IL/Lovington (NM)) led LF with 11 tackles.

Lake Forest, now 0-1 on the season, travels to Monmouth College (IL) next Saturday (September 16th) for the team's Midwest Conference opener. Chicago improved to 1-0.
