Growing up in Kewanee, Illinois, Fred attended Kewanee High School and was an outstanding athlete.

Entering Lake Forest College in 1922 on an athletic scholarship, he earned varsity letters in football, track and swimming.  Captain of both the swimming and football teams, he played every minute of every game his junior and senior years on the football team.  In addition to his athletic accomplishments, Fred was also a member of the Glee Club and Kappa Sigma fraternity. 

Graduating in 1926 with a degree in mathematics, he entered the U.S. Navy, where he would stay for 30 years.  He came to reside in Jacksonville, Florida where he was a business manager, real estate broker, and eventually vice president, treasurer and owner of South Atlantic Fire Equipment, Inc.  He served his community as a trustee of Ortega United Methodist Church and was a member of the Florida Yacht Club, Timuquana Country Club, and the Retired Officers Association and Navy League.
