Growing up in Clinton, Iowa, Guy attended Clinton High School.  Along with being a state meet qualifier in diving for two years, he was also a member of the National Honor Society and was an Iowa State Scholar.

Entering Lake Forest in 1976, he went on to earn four letters in swimming and diving.  He was a four-time NCAA III Qualifier and was an All-America selection.  Co-captain his senior year, he was undefeated in dual meets his junior season and, as of 1997, still holds the school record for the 1 meter and 3 meter diving events.  Guy was a learn-to-swim instructor at the College and was a member of the Chemistry Advisory Board.

Graduating with a degree in history, he entered the business world, but eventually left a major corporation to establish his own Clinical Research Consulting firm and to continue coaching.  He returned to Lake Forest College and served as diving coach for eleven years, guiding his athletes to All-America status and conference championships.  During his time at Lake Forest, he also coached at area clubs, Lake Forest High School, and established a U.S. Diving Club, Scout Diving.  He continues to coach for Windy City Diving in Lincolnshire
