2002-03 Preview: Another Year, Another Title...or Two...or Three

With Amy's performance in 2002, the Sove's became the 7th family in Forester Handball history to have multiple All-Americans.
LAKE FOREST, IL - With 21 Intercollegiate Championships, Lake Forest College Head Coach Mike Dau and the Forester handball program are accustomed to bringing home titles. At the 2000 Intercollegiates, the men's team won its second straight title and the total points scored by the men's and women's teams resulted in the first Combined Team title since 1988. The following year, however, the 2001 team set the standard for the future by winning all three team championships for the first time in the history of the program.

The 2002 team could not duplicate winning the three team titles but did repeat as Combined Team Champion in addition to winning the Women's title. The goal of the 2003 team is obvious and will require a monumental commitment and significant input by the incoming freshmen.

The building blocks for this year's team will center on five returning All America players; Megan Mehilos, David Munson, Amy Sove, Megan Gibson, and Samantha England. Mehilos will be seeking her third consecutive singles and doubles titles while Munson, a doubles champion in 2002, will be looking to break into the final four. Sove, Gibson, and England will all be highly seeded players looking to challenge Mehilos for the top spot in the Women's division.

Coach Dau, who started the varsity handball program in 1969, also instilled in it a winning attitude. "Historically, our players have always been willing to pay the price for success but still manage to have fun in the process," he explains. "The current players take a lot of pride in our tradition of excellence and, like all champions, they have an acute disdain for losing."
