"Our women really dominated," recalls Dau, "and the men also played extremely well. Together they scored enough points for us to win the combined title, which I really wasn't sure we were strong enough to do." Coach Dau's next objective is to win a fourth straight women's championship and reclaim the men's. "The 2001 team set the standard for future squads by taking home all three titles," he explains. "We've been able to win two of three each of the last two years but the sweep is still our ultimate goal." Individually, the Foresters boast the best collegiate female player in the country in Megan Mehilos, who has won both the singles and doubles national championships each of the last three years. She and Samantha England return to lead the women's team. England earned All-America honors with a runner-up finish in doubles in 2001 and again by reaching the semifinals in singles play last year. On the men's side, David Munson, a two-time All-America selection, leads the squad. He and Ivan Ruiz achieved that status at last year's collegiate championships with their runner-up finish in the Open Doubles bracket. Munson also reached the quarterfinals in Open Singles competition for the third consecutive year. In 2003-04, Munson will also attempt to defend his Circle City Tournament
singles and doubles (with Ruiz) titles in Indianapolis. In addition to
her accomplishments at the national tourney, Mehilos is also the returning
champ at the Illinois Handball Association Women's Singles Tournament.
Munson, Mehilos, and the rest of the Foresters will look to carry on their
championship tradition next year and well into the future.
