Lake Forest Players Reach Eight Divisional Finals at Circle City
Carly Stickles wins open singles and doubles titles

INDIANAPOLIS, IN - The Forester handball team competed in the Circle City Tournament in Indianapolis over the weekend (February 10-12) and found significant success in both the men’s and women’s competition.

Freshman Jon Iglesias (Elmhurst, NY) reached the Men’s Open Singles final, where he was defeated by Lake Forest College graduate David Munson ’04. An impressive performance was also turned in by freshman Bill O’Donnell (Bayside, NY), who knocked off the tourney’s #2 seed in the quarterfinals.

Sophomore Carly Stickles (Ridgeway, ON) recorded a 21-6, 21-8 victory over junior Lisa Jeziorny (Orland Park, IL) to claim the Women’s Open title.

The Foresters also won in both the Men’s and Women’s A-Division Singles titles. Senior Arturo Herrera (Anchorage, AK) recorded a come-from-behind 9-21, 21-5, 11-3 triumph and sophomore Kim Braden (Beloit, WI) prevailed 21-1, 21-7.

O’Donnell and senior Tyler Stevens (Toledo, OH) advanced to the final in the Men’s Open Doubles competition but fell 21-12, 21-7.

The Women’s Open Doubles final was an all-Lake Forest affair as Stickles and Jeziorny recorded a 21-2, 21-0 victory over junior Lindsay Ross (Springfield, IL) and senior Kim Lawser (West Chester, PA).

Lake Forest came out on top of both the Men’s and Women’s B-Division Doubles brackets. Senior Rob Burda (Meridian, ID) and sophomore Kevin Jarvis (Chicago, IL) won 21-8, 21-19 on the men’s side while seniors Melissa Peters (Buffalo Grove, IL) and Clare Longfellow (Wilmette, IL) defeated Braden and sophomore Jessie Birecki (Andover, MA) 21-3, 21-8 in the finals.

The team will compete in the Illinois Handball Association Doubles Tournament in Des Plaines next weekend (February 16-19). It will be the squad’s final tune-up before the United States Handball Association Collegiate National Championships the following weekend (February 22-26).
