FORESTERS TUNE-UP FOR INTERCOLLEGIATES WITH DOUBLES ACTION

In their final tune-up before Intercollegiates, the Lake Forest handball teams participated in a doubles tournament hosted by the Athletic Club of Bloomingdale, IL this past weekend.

The Foresters number one doubles team of Mike Bargman and Mike Munson advanced to the championship match after two tough tiebreaker wins in both the quarterfinal and semifinal rounds. In the final match, Lake Forest College Hall of Famer Dave Dohman and his partner, Oscar Zamora, defeated Bargman and Munson.

It was an all-Lake Forest cast in the finals of the "A" doubles division with Mark O'Leary and Bill Mehilos winning over teammates Keith Vassall and Nick Brown, 21-9, 21-7. Freshman Leo Arensberg and Eamon O'Leary won the "C" doubles division as O'Leary cracked out four consecutive ace serves to end the second game and record a 21-13, 21-14 win.

The women's competition was designated as the Illinois State Doubles Championship and for the second consecutive year Sabrina Zamora and Erika Sove took the title. Following a hard-earned tiebreaker win in the semifinals, Zamora and Sove had their hands full with Lynn Alesi and future Forester Megan Mehilos. After splitting the first two games, 21-14, 19-21, Zamora/Sove jumped out to a 9-2 lead only to see their advantage shrink considerably to 9-8. However, after they regained the serve, Zamora hammered home two tough serves to end the threat and close out the match.

Mary Gerke and Amy Sove concluded the competition by taking the women's "A" doubles title with a 21-20, 21-7 win over another former Forester, Tanya Dietzler, and her partner, Terry Mehilos.

The Foresters leave this week for the Intercollegiates, hosted by Southwest Missouri State University, in Springfield, MO. The tournament will run from Thursday (Feb. 17) through Sunday (Feb. 20).
