Foresters Sweep Open Championships at Circle City Tournament
Munson and Mehilos each capture singles and doubles titles

INDIANAPOLIS, IN - Lake Forest College handball coach Mike Dau ’58 took his team to Indianapolis over the weekend (February 13-15) to compete in the Circle City Handball Tournament. The players returned with titles in eight of the 10 divisions in which they competed.

Seniors Dave Munson (Williston, VT) and Megan Mehilos (Addison, IL) each claimed titles in both the Open Singles and Open Doubles competition. Munson won his fourth singles tourney of the year with a 13-21, 21-7, 11-1 victory in the championship match. He also teamed with sophomore Ivan Ruiz (Los Angeles, CA), who won the A-Division Singles crown, to prevail 21-12, 21-13 in the doubles title match. Mehilos’s 21-5, 21-6 win over fellow senior and doubles teammate Samantha England (Prince George, British Columbia) in the finals was her closest match of the singles competition and the duo combined for a hard-fought 21-18, 21-19 doubles championship match triumph.

Sophomore Derek Meiring (Carleton, MI) and senior Dan McNabney (Moro, IL) each needed three games to win championship matches in the Men’s A and B Singles Divisions, respectively. Meiring lost the first game 21-9 before rebounding to win game two 21-7 and the tiebreaker 11-5. McNabney took game one 21-19, lost game two 21-17, and won the tiebreaker 11-8.

The squad’s eighth divisional title came in the Women’s B-Division Doubles bracket where sophomore Annette King (Washington, IL) teamed with Katie Sedgwick for a 21-2, 21-6 victory over Forester sophomore Clare Longfellow (Wilmette, IL) and freshman Lisa Jeziorny (Orland Park, IL).

Four other Lake Forest men won at least one singles match in the event. Senior Garrett Silveira (S. Hadley, MA) and sophomores Tyler Stevens (Toledo, OH) and Arturro Herrera, Jr. (Anchorage, AK) prevailed in the first round of the Open Division and junior Marty Quinn (Evergreen Park, IL) won twice to reach the semifinals of the C-Division.

Meiring and Quinn teamed up for a first-round win the in the B-Division Doubles bracket, as did McNabney and sophomore Rob Burda (Meridian, ID).

On the women’s side, senior Sarah Roberts (Plainfield, IL) and juniors Michelle and Danielle White (Nova Scotia, Canada) triumphed in the first round of the Open Division Singles competition. In the B-Division, Longfellow and juniors Tina Koludrovic (Darien, IL) and Nadia Fazel (Paradise Valley, AZ) advanced to the semifinals, where only Koludrovic won before falling in the finals.

Lake Forest players will compete in the Illinois Handball Association Doubles Tournaments next weekend (February 19-21) before traveling to Springfield, Missouri, for the 2004 United States Handball Collegiate National Championship Tournament on February 25-29.
