Foresters Compete at Illinois Handball Association Doubles Tournament
Three different Forester men's and women's teams place among top four

DES PLAINES, Ill. - Lake Forest College competed in the Illinois Handball Association Doubles Tournament over the weekend (February 12-15). Two Forester women's teams and one men's pair placed among the top four in the Open Divisions and several others finished among the leaders in lower divisions.

The top four teams in the Women's Open Division played in a round robin format and juniors Aimee Ulbert (Des Plaines, Ill.) and Emily Zender (Fishers, Ind.) won two of three matches to place second. Freshman Maria Dugas (Halifax, Nova Scotia) and senior Alex Charron (Calgary, Alberta) were 1-2 and finished third.

In the Men's Open junior Suhn Lee (Glenview, Ill.) and sophomore Nikolai Nahorniak (Elk Grove, Ill.) won their quarterfinal match 21-1, 21-1 before falling in the semifinals.

The Women's B Division also used a round robin format. Senior Hannah Michal (Lake Villa, Ill.) and sophomore Sarah Brusig (Rifle, Colo.) finished first after sweeping their three matches, including a 20-21, 21-3, 11-5 triumph over sophomores Nicole Moser (Oak Lawn, Ill.) and Bianca Greene (Santa Monica, Calif.). Moser and Greene wom their other two matches to place second. Junior Viri Del Bosque (Rockford, Ill.) and freshman Ann Szutenbach (Chicago, Ill.) were 1-2 and placed third.

Senior James Zender (Fishers, Ind.) and freshman Riley Kloss (Mt. Prospect, Ill.) had a first-round bye in the Men's B Division and defeated senior Kushal Modi (North Little Rock, Ark.) and freshman Dan Sterrett (Oak Park, Ill.) 21-6, 21-17 in the quarterfinals. Modi and Sterrett won 21-2, 14-21, 11-4 in the round of 16. Senior Asa Reynolds (Bethesda, Md.) and junior Brian Connolly (Lemont, Ill.) also reached the quarterfinals after a 21-11, 21-6 triumph in the round of 16. Reynolds and Connolly went on to win three straight matches to claim the Men's C Division title. Modi and Sterrett were their semifinal opponents.

The Foresters will travel to Minneapolis, Minnesota, next week (February 18-22) for the United States Handball Association Collegiate National Championships. Play will begin on Wednesday and continue through Sunday. Lake Forest was the runner-up in the men's, women's, and combined divisions last year and have six championships in each division since 1998.
