DES PLAINES, Ill. - The Forester handball team competed at the Illinois Handball Association Doubles Tournament over the weekend (February 14-17). Lake Forest doubles teams advanced to the finals in both women’s and three of four men’s divisions.

Junior Jon Iglesias (Elmhurst, Ill.) and sophomore Suhn Lee (Glenview, Ill.) entered the event as the number three seed in the Men’s Open Division and knocked off the second-seeded team 21-10, 21-17 in the semifinals. Their run ended with a 21-18, 21-15 loss to Lake Forest graduates Mike and David Munson in the championship match.

In the Women’s Open sophomores Aimee Ulbert (Des Plaines, Ill.) and Emily Zender (Fishers, Ind.) won a pair of matches before falling 21-6, 21-3 in the final to a team that included Megan Mehilos, another former Forester. After prevailing in the quarterfinals, seniors Carly Stickles (Ridgeway, Ont.) and Jessie Birecki (Andover, Mass.) were also knocked off by the eventual champs.

After being eliminated in the quarterfinals of the open bracket, freshmen Nikolai Nahorniak (Elk Grove, Ill.) and Victor Perez (Los Angeles, Calif.) rattled off three consecutive victories, the last by forfeit, to claim the Men’s A Division title.

Senior Kim Braden (Beloit, Wis.) and junior Alex Charron (Calgary, Alb.) advanced to the Women’s A Division final before falling 21-13, 7-21, 11-4. Freshmen Sarah Brusig (Rifle, Colo.) and Bianca Greene (Santa Monica, Calif.) defeated junior Hannah Michal (Lake Villa, Ill.) and freshman Nicole Moser (Oak Lawn, Ill.) 21-11, 13-21, 11-3 in the division’s third-place match.

Juniors James Zender (Fishers, Ind.) and Asa Reynolds (Bethesda, Md.) defeated classmates Kushal Modi (North Little Rock, Ark.) and Mike Carpenter (St. Peters, Mo.) 21-7, 21-16 in the Men’s B Division quarterfinals before being edged out 21-16, 21-19 in the semifinals.

A 12-21, 21-6, 11-4 come-from-behind triumph in the Men’s C Division’s title match finished off a run of three straight wins by sophomore Brian Connolly (Lemont, Ill.) and senior Tom Cirone (Chicago, Ill.).

After just a few days off, Forester players will compete in the United States Handball Association Collegiate National Championships from Wednesday through Sunday (February 20-24). Lake Forest is the event’s defending women’s and combined team champion.
