Foresters Compete in I.H.A. Doubles Tournament

DES PLAINES, IL - The Lake Forest handball teams competed in the Illinois Handball Association Men’s and Women’s Doubles Tournaments over the weekend (February 17-19). The Foresters had two championship teams and a pair of runners-up in the event’s six divisions.

In the Women’s Open, senior Danielle White (Monastery, NS) and freshman Carly Stickles (Ridgeway, ON) reached the championship match before falling 21-10, 21-7. They defeated seniors Michelle White (Monastery, NS) and Tina Koludrovic (Darien, IL) 21-9, 21-5 in the semifinals. Sophomores Lisa Jeziorny (Orland Park, IL) and Lindsay Ross (Springfield, IL) also reached the semifinals and later knocked of Michelle White and Koludrovic 18-21, 21-18, 11-8 in the A-Division final.

On the men’s side, senior Garrett Silveira (S. Hadley, MA) and junior Ivan Ruiz (Los Angeles, CA) reached the final of the A-Division before falling 21-4, 21-11. They knocked off senior Tyler Stevens (Toledo, OH) and junior Arturo Herrera (Anchorage, AK) 15-14, 15-10 in the semifinals. Senior Dan McNabney (Moro, IL) and junior Derek Meiring (Carleton, MI) also reached the division’s semifinals. Senior Marty Quinn (Evergreen Park, IL) and freshman Joe Grubisic (Chicago, IL) won a pair of matches to claim the C-Division title.

Both the Forester men and women will compete in the United States Handball Association Collegiate National Championship Tournament next weekend. The Lake Forest women are the defending champions and the men placed third at last year’s championship. The teams placed second in the combined competition.
