MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. - The Lake Forest College handball teams captured the men's, women's, and combined titles at the 2009 United States Handball Association Collegeiate National Championships over the weekend (February 18-22). This year's Foresters joined the 2001 and 2005 squads as the only teams in program history to win all three championships.

Handball All-America honors are handed out to all semifinalists in the Open Singles division and finalists in Open Doubles. Five Foresters made the list, including junior Aimee Ulbert (Des Plaines, Ill.), the runner-up in both singles and doubles. She posted a 21-12, 21-9 triumph in the Open Singles semifinals before falling in the final. In doubles, she teamed with classmate Emily Zender (Fishers, Ind.) on a 21-14, 21-20 semifinal victory before suffering a 21-18, 21-8 loss in the championship.

Sophomore Nikolai Nahorniak (Elk Grove, Ill.) defeated junior Suhn Lee (Glenview, Ill.) 21-10, 21-15 in the men's Open Singles semifinals before falling 21-18, 21-7 in the final. Lee partnered with senior Jon Iglesias (Elmhurst, Ill.) in doubles and the pair reached the final before dropping a 21-16, 21-2 decision. Iglesias became the first Forester male in 13 years to earn All-America honors four straight seasons, a feat Lee will attempt to match in 2010.

Iglesias and sophomore Victor Perez (Los Angeles, Calif.) also had success in the Open Singles bracket where each recorded a pair of victories to advance to the quarterfinals. Zender and freshman Maria Dugas (Halifax, Nova Scotia) were also eliminated in the quarterfinals in the women's Open Singles Division.

Senior James Zender (Fishers, Ind.) came from behind to win 7-21, 21-20, 11-7 in the men's A Singles round of 32 before falling in the round of 16. Senior Alex Charron (Calgary, Alberta) posted a pair of convincing victories before falling in the women's A Division quarterfinals.

After splitting two preliminary matches, sophomore Pat Jarvis (Chicago, Ill.) rattled off five straight victories to claim the men's B Singles Division title. He came from behind to win 20-21, 21-11, 11-3 in the semifinals and rolled to a 21-7, 21-8 triumph in the final. Freshman Riley Kloss (Mt. Prospect, Ill.) was defeated in the bracket's round of 16 while seniors Kushal Modi (North Little Rock, Ark.) and Asa Reynolds (Bethesda, Md.) and juniors Brian Connolly (Lemont, Ill.) and Joey Urbani (Bozeman, Mont) were eliminated in the round of 16. Senior Hannah Michal (Lake Villa, Ill.) registered a dramatic 21-13, 7-21, 11-10 victory to advance to the women's B Singles quarterfinals. Sophomores Nicole Moser (Oak Lawn, Ill.) and Sarah Brusig (Rifle, Colo.) were knocked off in the round of 16.

Freshman Dan Sterrett (Oak Park, Ill.) and sophomore Ayal Sharvit (Buffalo Grove, Ill.) split their two preliminary matches to earn a spot in the C Singles Division. Sterrett then posted five victories in a row, including a 7-21, 21-9, 11-8 triumph in the semifinals and a 21-10, 21-8 win in the bracket's championship match. Sharvit fell in the round of 32. Results of two preliminary matches placed junior Viri Del Bosque (Rockford, Ill.), sophomores Bianca Greene (Santa Monica, Calif.) and Shelia Connolly (Lemont, Ill.) in the women's C Singles Division. Greene reached the bracket's semifinals, Del Bosque the quarterfinals, and Connolly the round of 16.

In other singles divisions freshman Ann Szutenbach (Chicago, Ill.) reached the women's Intermediate round of 16 and sophomore Emma Swanson (Lincolnshire, Ill.) the Challengers semifinals.

Nahorniak and Perez teamed up to reach the men's Open Doubles semifinals, where they were defeated by the eventual champions. The same was true for Dugas and Charron on the women's side. Doubles partners Michal and Brusig as well as the team of Greene and Moser posted victories in the preliminary round of the women's Open Doubles before falling in the quarterfinals.

Kloss and Reynolds won their B Doubles round of 16 match before being eliminated in the quarterfinals.

The three national championships give the Foresters 33 under the direction of head coach Mike Dau, who started the program in 1968.
