Foresters Repeat as Women's and Overall Intercollegiate Champions
Six Players Achieve All-America Honors

Megan Mehilos now has four USHA Championships in as many opportunities.
COLLEGE STATION, TX - The Forester handball team continued its dominance in the United States Handball Association Intercollegiate Championships this weekend (February 21-24th). The women's team claimed its second straight championship and the combined title was also a repeat performance for Lake Forest. The men finished in second place behind host Texas A&M University.

The women's team scored 756 points to defend its crown. Texas A&M finished second with 636 points and Southwest Missouri State University was third with 544.

In the Women's Open Singles competition, sophomore Megan Mehilos (Addison, IL) successfully defended her championship from a year ago. Mehilos had to knock off freshman teammate Danielle White (Nova Scotia, Canada) in the round of 16 and Forester senior captain Leslie Boyle (Chicago Heights, IL) to advance to the final match. Along with Mehilos, Boyle earned All-America honors for reaching the semifinals.

Juniors Amy Sove (Modesto, CA) and Megan Gibson (Brown Deer, WI) each received first-round byes and won a pair of matches to advance to the quarterfinals. Freshman Michelle White (Nova Scotia, Canada) and sophomore Sarah Roberts (Plainfield, IL) also won their first two matches to reach the round of 16. Roberts then advanced to the finals of the 'A' Division.

In Women's Doubles, all three Forester teams advanced to the semifinals and it was an all Lake Forest final. Roberts and White were defeated in the semifinals by Gibson and Sove, who lost to Mehilos and Boyle in the finals. All-America honors went to both finalist teams. The doubles title was the second in as many chances for Mehilos and the first for Boyle. All-America honors went out to the four players participating in the championship match.

On the men's side, Lake Forest's 646 points were just 42 less than Texas A&M's winning total (688) and 46 more than Southwest Missouri State (600), who finished third in both the men's and women's competition.

For the second straight year, Bill Mehilos (Addison, IL) earned All-America status but was eliminated in the semifinals of the Men's Open Singles competition by the eventual tournament champion. It was the first tournament on the Foresters' 2001-02 schedule that the senior captain failed to reach the finals.

Sophomore David Munson (Williston, VT) fell just short in his bid for All-America honors in singles when he was defeated in the quarterfinals. It was the second straight year that a tiebreaker was needed to oust him from the tournament in the round of eight. Freshman Ference Dominguez (Elmhurst, NY) won his first two matches to reach the round of 32 and junior Derrick Tiveron (Toronto, Ontario) won his first match to make the round of 64 where he, like Mehilos, was turned away by the eventual champ.

Freshman Alex Martinez (Andover, CT), who lost in the opening round of the Open competition, won his next four matches before finally falling in the finals of the 'B' Division.

Munson teamed up with Mehilos to defend the Foresters' title and achieve All-America distinction in the Men's Doubles Competition. Mehilos partnered with Mike Munson '01, David's older brother, to take the crown last year. Dominguez and Martinez won a pair of matches to advance to the quarterfinals and Tiveron joined with Mike Sheehan (Sycamore, IL) to win a match to make the round of 16.

Combined, the women's and men's teams tallied 1,402 points. Texas A&M was second with 1,324 and Southwest Missouri State was third with 1,144. Pacific University also topped the 1,000-point mark and finished in fourth place with 1,008.

The championships are the 20th and 21st in the Foresters' storied history. Head Coach Mike Dau '58, who started the program in 1968, has directed the team to each of those titles.
