Lake Forest Claims Women’s and Combined National Titles

LOS ANGELES, Calif. - The Forester handball teams competed at the United States Handball Association Collegiate National Championships over the weekend (February 21-25). The Lake Forest women placed first in the team standings, the men second, and the Foresters claimed the combined championship. The women’s title was the sixth in the last seven years for the team and the combined championship was the sixth in the last eight. The program has now claimed 30 national championships in its 38 years.

Lake Forest claimed national titles in both men’s and women’s doubles. Junior Jon Iglesias (Elmhurst, N.Y.) teamed with freshman Suhn Lee (Glenview, Ill.) for a 21-13, 21-7 victory in the men’s championship match and freshman Aimee Ulbert (Des Plaines, Ill.) partnered with senior Lindsay Ross (Springfield, Ill.) for a 21-13, 21-9 triumph in the women’s title tilt.

Iglesias and junior Carly Stickles (Ridgeway, Ont.) also earned All-America honors by reaching the Open Singles semifinals. Iglesias won 21-16, 21-5 in the quarterfinals before being eliminated by the eventual champion 10-21, 21-12, 11-8. Stickles prevailed 21-11, 21-12 in the quarterfinals before also falling to the eventual champ 21-7, 21-7. Both Iglesias and Stickles were semifinalists last year as well.

Lee and Ulbert reached the Open Singles quarterfinals before being eliminated. Ulbert eventually won the fifth-place match 21-5, 21-6.

Junior Kevin Jarvis (Chicago, Ill.) advanced to the A Singles semifinals and classmate Mike Mehilos (Addison, Ill.) reached the same division’s quarterfinal round before sustaining an injury. Freshman Joey Urbani (Bozeman, Mont.) and Brian Connolly (Lemont, Ill.) each recorded a pair of wins and both junior Tom Pfeil (Philadelphia, Pa.) and sophomore James Zender (Fishers, Ind.) triumphed once to earn a spot in the B Singles tournament, where all four were defeated in the first round. Senior Lee Fabiatos (Hamburg, N.Y.) and junior Jimmy Kite (Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla.) reached the semifinals and round of 16, respectively, in the C Singles bracket. Sophomore Kushal Modi (North Little Rock, Ark.) won twice to get into the Intermediate Singles division but lost in the first round. Sophomores Asa Reynolds (Bethesda, Md.) and Mike Carpenter (St. Peters, Mo.) made it through to the division’s semifinals and round of 16, respectively.

Pfeil and Urbani advanced to the final in the B Doubles division and Connolly and Zender reached the semifinals.

On the women’s side, Ross, fellow senior Lisa Jeziorny (Orland Park, Ill.), and freshman Emly Zender (Fishers, Ind.) competed in the A Division quarterfinals and Jeziorny advanced one more round before falling. Junior Jessie Birecki (Andover, Mass.) qualified to play in the B Singles but lost in the first round. Senior Rebecca Bride (Wilmot, N.H.), junior Kim Braden (Beloit, Wis.), and sophomore Alex Charron (Calgary, Alb.) competed in the C Singles Division where Charron and Braden reached the semifinals. Sophomore Hannah Michal (Lake Villa, Ill.) defeated freshman Hayley Roberts (La Grange, Ill.) in the semifinals of the Contenders Division and went on to claim the bracket’s title.

Birecki and Zender reached the quarterfinals and Stickles and Jeziorny the semifinals in Open Doubles competition.

Missouri State University won the men’s team competition and placed second to Lake Forest in the women’s and combined categories.
