Lake Forest Claims All Three Titles at National Championship Tourney
Carly Stickles and Danielle White earn Handball All-America honors

  

The 2005 team joins the 2001 squad as the only Foresters to claim all three team titles.
MINNEAPOLIS, MN - The Forester handball teams claimed first place in the men’s, women’s, and combined competitions at the 2005 United States Handball Association Collegiate National Championship Tournament over the weekend (February 23-27). Lake Forest has now claimed five consecutive women’s, five of the last six combined, and five of the last eight men’s titles. Head Coach Mike Dau and the program have won 27 championships in all.

The Forester men finished with 1,038 points, just five more than the Dublin Institute of Technology. Southwest Missouri State University was third with 909. On the women’s side, Lake Forest tallied 1,021 points, Southwest Missouri State scored 956, and Texas A&M University had 875.

Senior Danielle White (Monastery, NS) and freshman Carly Stickles (Ridgeway, ON) earned the team’s only Handball All-America honors with their runner-up finish in Open Doubles. Both also reached the Open Singles quarterfinals. Senior Tina Koludrovic (Darien, IL) and sophomore Lisa Jeziorny (Orland Park, IL) each won in the Open Singles bracket and Koludrovic reached the “A” semifinals.

Senior Michelle White (Monastery, NS) rattled off five straight victories to win the “B” division title. Sophomore Lindsay Ross (Springfield, IL) and junior Clare Longfellow (Wilmette, IL) each recorded a pair of wins to reach the “C” semifinals. Junior Kim Lawser (West Chester, PA) and sophomore Rebecca Bride (Wilmot, NH) advanced to the “C” and “Challengers” quarterfinals, respectively.

In Women’s Open Doubles, Jeziorny and Ross won their first round match to reach the quarterfinals.

Senior Tyler Stevens (Toledo, OH) and junior Ivan Ruiz (Los Angeles, CA) were the Foresters’ top two male finishers in the Open Singles competition. Both players won twice to reach the round of 16. Senior Garrett Silveira (S. Hadley, MA) and juniors Derek Meiring (Carleton, MI) and Arturo Herrera (Anchorage, AK) recorded one victory apiece in the Open Singles bracket and both Silveira and Meiring went on to reach the “A” Singles semifinals.

Freshman Mike Mehilos (Addison, IL) won four consecutive matches before falling in the finals of the “B” Singles division and classmate Kevin Jarvis (Chicago, IL) won five in a row to reach the “C” Singles semifinals. Joe Grubisic (Chicago, IL), another freshman, won twice to advance to the quarterfinals in the “Intermediate” division.

Silveira and Ruiz teamed up and won twice to reach the Open Doubles semifinals. Silveira and Ruiz were also semifinalists in the Open division.

The Foresters will lose eight seniors – three women and five men – to graduation in May.
