FORESTER MEN CLAIM SCHOOL'S 14TH NATIONAL
CHAMPIONSHIP
Winning the men's team national
championship on Sunday was nothing new to the Lake Forest handball program
- it was the school's 14th national title - but it was the first repeat
championship since 1984, the last year of a seven-year run by the Foresters.
Lake Forest rode the backs of Dane Szatkowski '00 and Joe Hagen '99 to
the title. Each earned All-America honors in both singles and doubles.
In the Men's Open Singles bracket, Szatkowski defeated Hagen 21-20, 21-13
in the semi-finals before falling to Tony Healy of Dublin University in
the finals. Hagen and Szatkowski teamed up in the Open Doubles bracket
and advanced to the final match before falling to the team of Anton Wilson
and Larry Neves from Fresno City College, who earlier prevented an all-Lake
Forest final by defeating Jai Ragoo '99 and Mike Munson '01 in the semi-finals.
It was Hagen's third and fourth appearance on the All-America list, but
his first as a singles competitor. Dane Szatkowski become the second
in his family to earn All-America status, following in the footsteps of
his brother Adam, an All-American last year.
The women's team took
second to Southwest Missouri State, who also edged Lake Forest to win the
combined team title. Sabrina Zamora '00 also earned dual All-America
honors by advancing to the finals of both the singles and doubles brackets.
Erica Sove '01 combined with Zamora in doubles play to earn her All-America
status. Zamora was also an All-American last year.
The school's 14th national
championship was even sweeter because it was the first time since 1992
that the Foresters had hosted the event. The tournament was held
at two sites, the Nordic Hills Resort and The Athletic Club of Bloomingdale.
One hundred ninety players, representing 29 schools from the United States,
Canada and Ireland competed in this year's International Collegiate Tournament. |
