Women Win Again as Mehilos Claims Record Seventh and Eighth USHA Titles
Senior is first player ever to win singles and doubles championships all four years

Megan Mehilos made history with the seventh and eighth USHA titles of her career.
SPRINGFIELD, MO - Lake Forest’s women’s team claimed its fourth consecutive United States Handball Association Collegiate National Championship Sunday (February 29). The title is the 24th overall (four women’s, 11 men’s, and nine combined) for 35th-year head coach Mike Dau ’58.

The top story from the tournament was Lake Forest senior Megan Mehilos (Addison, IL) claiming both the Open Singles and Open Doubles championships for the fourth straight year. She became the first player (male or female) in the 52-year history of the event to accomplish the feat and she won each of her four doubles titles with a different partner.

Mehilos won 21-20, 21-13 in the singles championship, which was by far her closest match of the tourney as she outscored her previous four opponents by a combined 168-16. She teamed with fellow senior Samantha England (Prince George, British Columbia) in doubles and the duo, who won each of their three matches in just two games, prevailed 21-4, 21-12 in the championship.

England and another senior, Sarah Roberts (Plainfield, IL), each advanced to the quarterfinals of the Open Singles bracket. Juniors Danielle and Michelle White (Nova Scotia, Canada) both won once before falling in the round of 16. Roberts and Danielle White also teamed up to reach the semifinals in Open Doubles.

The Forester women also found success in some of the drop-down singles brackets. Junior Tina Koludrovic (Darien, IL) reached the round of 16 in the B-Division, sophomore Clare Longfellow (Wilmette, IL) advanced to the semifinals of the C-Division, and Lisa Jeziorny (Orland Park, IL) made it all the way to the finals of the Intermediate Division.

On the men’s side, senior David Munson (Williston, VT) earned All-America honors in singles for the first time in his career by winning four matches and reaching the semifinals. He had been knocked out in the quarterfinals each of the last three seasons. Munson also earned All-America distinction for the third time in doubles play when he and sophomore Ivan Ruiz (Los Angeles, CA) advanced to the championship match for the second straight year.

Ruiz and junior Alex Martinez (Andover, CT) reached the round of 32 before falling in the Open Singles Division. In the drop-down brackets, senior Garrett Silveira (S. Hadley, MA) won five straight matches to claim the C-Division title and junior Victor Pacheco (Highland Park, IL) used three victories to reach the semifinals of the Contenders Division. Sophomore Derek Meiring (Carleton, MI) and senior Marty Quinn (Evergreen Park, IL) advanced to the quarterfinals in B-Doubles.
