Lake Forest Women Dominate, Men Challenge for Titles at Circle City
Aimee Ulbert wins both Open Singles and Doubles championships

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - The Forester handball team competed in the Circle City Tournament over the weekend (February 2-4). The Lake Forest men reached the finals in four of the seven brackets while the women claimed all four of their divisional titles.

Freshman Aimee Ulbert (Des Plains, Ill.) walked away with championships in both the Open Singles and Open Doubles competition. She defeated junior Carly Stickles (Ridgeway, Ont.) the two-time defending champion, 21-15, 21-14 in the singles final and teamed with senior Lindsay Ross (Springfield, Ill.) to knock off defending champs Stickles and senior Lisa Jeziorny (Orland Park, Ill.) 21-7, 21-9 in the doubles title match.

Stickles defeated Ross and Ulbert knocked off Jeziorny in the Open Singles semifinals. Juniors Kim Braden (Beloit, Wis.) and Jessie Birecki (Andover, Mass.) as well as freshman Emily Zender (Fishers, Ind.) also won opening round matches to advance to the quarterfinals. In addition, Zender and Birecki teamed up to reach the Open Doubles semifinals before falling to Ulbert and Ross.

On the men’s side junior Jon Iglesias (Elmhurst, N.Y.) and freshman Suhn Lee (Glenview, Ill.) won twice each to advance to the Open Singles semifinals. The two teamed up for a pair of victories in the Open Doubles competition before falling in the championship match.

Sophomore Alex Charron (Calgary, Alb.) won three straight matches to capture the Women’s “A” Singles title. She defeated classmate Hannah Michal (Lake Villa, Ill.) in the semifinals after both had won quarterfinal matches. The two were partners in doubles competition and recorded two victories to claim the “A” championship.

Junior Mike Mehilos (Addison, Ill.) prevailed three times to advance to the “A” Singles final, where he fell in three sets. Fellow junior Tom Pfeil (Philadelphia, Pa.) reached the final of the “B” Singles bracket by knocking off sophomore James Zender (Fishers, Ind.) in the semifinals. Both won twice to advance to that point. They were together in doubles play and posted a pair of victories to reach the “B” Doubles semifinals. Senior Lee Fabiatos (Hamburg, N.Y.) notched three consecutive wins before falling in the “C” Singles final. Sophomore Chris Bembynista (Overland Park, Kan.) also posted a victory in that bracket.

After a weekend off from competition, the Foresters will compete in the Illinois Handball Association Doubles Tournaments February 15-18.
