FORESTERS FARE WELL AT CIRCLE CITY TOURNAMENT

In the next to last competition prior to Intercollegiates, the 1999-2000 Forester handball team brought home an abundance of hardware from the Circle City Tournament in Indianapolis this past weekend.

Although the men did not fare well in the Open Singles competition, with only senior Mike Bargman advancing to the semi-final round before losing to former Forester Shane Conneely '98, both Mark O'Leary and Bill Mehilos played well in spite of losing tough matches in the quarterfinals, according to Head Coach Mike Dau.

In the Men's A Singles division, Nate Podrid continued to show improvement with each tournament, going the tie-breaker route in the quarterfinals, semifinals, and finals. He garnered a victory over teammate Nick Brown, 8-21, 21-19, 11-5, in the finals. Brown, a freshman, is also starting to show flashes of his potential and could be a sleeper in the Intercollegiates, according to Dau.

The Women's Open Singles was won by Megan Mehilos, who will be attending Lake Forest next fall. With Sabrina Zamora entered in the Men's B Singles, Mehilos ran through the field with a 21-5, 21-9 victory over Lake Forest's number two singles player, Erika Sove.

In the Women's A Singles division, sophomore Leslie Boyle continued to show steady improvement as she defeated former Foresters Niamh Conneely '99 in a 21-8, 21-18 championship win.

In the Men's Open Doubles competition, Mark O'Leary and Bill Mehilos gave a strong showing before falling 19-21, 21-6, 11-7 in the quarterfinal round to eventual champions Dane Szatkowski and Brian Johnson. Foresters Mike Bargman and Mike Munson advanced to the finals before falling to the team of Szatkowski and Johnson, 21-15, 21-8.

All of the women's doubles teams were entered in the Men's B Doubles division, where Zamora and Sove advanced to the finals before falling to Lake Forest's Eamon O'Leary and Leo Arensberg, 21-5, 21-7.

The Foresters are entered in a local tournament in Bloomingdale this weekend but will only participate in the doubles competition as a final tune-up for Intercollegiates.
