SEVERAL FORESTERS FAIR WELL AT WINTER BLAST TOURNEY

During a weekend in which Lake Forest Head Coach Mike Dau felt that, ".an excellent showing was given by a number of Foresters.", both the men's and women's handball teams competed in the Winter Blast Handball Tournament held at the College Park Athletic Club in Bannockburn, IL on Friday (Jan. 14) through Sunday (Jan. 16). Dau added, "We still have work to be done before the Intercollegiates, but the signs are promising." He also gave specific mention to Mike Munson, Bill Mehilos, and Erika Sove.

In the Men's Open Singles Division, senior Mike Bargman, playing from the number four seed position, was upset in the opening round by Gregg Hammond (South Bend) 21-17, 21-14. Munson upset the number one seed, Lake Forest College Hall of Famer Dave Dohman (Munster, IN), 15-21, 21-13, 11-7. Freshman Nick Brown also upset two seeded players and advanced to the semifinals.

Munson was the surprise of the tournament as he marched all the way to the finals. In the championship match, Munson blasted his way to a 21-12 first game victory against former Forester Joe Hagen. In the second game, Hagen turned the tables for a 21-17 win, and prevailed 11-4 in the tie-breaker. Sophomore Bill Mehilos also had a quality tournament, also losing in a tie-breaker match to Hagen.

Bargman bounced back from his first round loss in the Open Division to win the Men's A Singles Division. He defeated teammate Jeff Werstein, 21-20, 21-4, in the finals.

The Men's B Singles Division produced another all-Lake Forest final, this time between two Forester freshmen - Leo Arensberg and Eamon O'Leary. Arensburg eventually emerged victorious, 21-17, 21-19, in a match that was close throughout. Sabrina Zamora, playing in the Men's B's, gave an excellent account of herself by winning her first two matches before losing to O'Leary in the semifinals.

In the Men's C Division, senior Bon Miyasaka advanced to the championship match before a hand injury forced him to default. The injury was not serious and Miyasaka should be back in action shortly.

Erika Sove won her second consecutive Women's Open Tournament with a decisive win over Laura Boyer (Bartlett, IL), 21-7, 21-9. Her sister, Amy, also had a good showing before losing a tie-breaker match to Boyer in the semifinals.

Senior Mary Gerke rebounded from a first round loss in the Open Division to win the A Division in convincing fashion over Terry Mehilos (Addison, IL), 21-5, 21-8.
