Suhn Lee Reaches the Championship Match at the I.H.A. Singles Tournament

DES PLAINES, Ill. - The 2009 Illinois Handball Association Men's Singles Tournament was held in Des Plaines over the weekend (January 15-18) and 14 Lake Forest College players competed in the event.

Former Forester Dane Szatkowski claimed the title and,for the second year in a row, defeated Lake Forest senior Jon Iglesias (Elmhurst, Ill.) and junior Suhn Lee (Glenview, Ill.) in the final two rounds. Iglesias was the runner-up to Szatkowski in 2008 and won a pair of matches this year before falling 21-7, 21-4 to the defending champion in the semifinals. Lee won three matches, including a 21-15, 21-20 decision over the top seed in the semifinals. He then fell 16-21, 21-8, 11-3 to Szatkowski in the championship.

Sophomore Nikolai Nahorniak (Elk Grove, Ill.) won 21-4, 21-8 in the round of 16 before being defeated by Iglesias 21-18, 21-16 in the quarterfinals. Classmate Victor Perez (Los Angeles, Calif.) posted a 21-9, 21-9 victory in the round of 32 before being eliminated by the top seed in the round of 16.

Junior Joey Urbani (Bozeman, Mont.) recorded a pair of victories in the 'B' Division before being forced to forfeit his semifinal match due to injury. He defeated senior Asa Reynolds (Bethesda, Md.) 21-15, 21-7 in the quarterfinals. Reynolds prevailed 21-5, 21-2 in the round of 32 and 21-7, 21-4 in his round of 16 match. Senior James Zender (Fishers, Ind.) also reached the quarterfinals before falling 21-12, 21-6 to the division's eventual champion.

Other Foresters that registered victories in the 'B' Division round of 32 included senior Kushal Modi (North Little Rock, Ark.), junior Brian Connolly (Lemont, Ill.), sophomore Pat Jarvis (Chicago, Ill.), and freshman Dan Sterrett (Oak Park, Ill.).

The Lake Forest women's team will be in action next weekend (January 22-25) at the United States Handball Association Women's Classic in Syosset, New York. The Forester men will compete next at the Circle City Tournament in Indianapolis, Indiana, February 6-8.
