Jon Iglesias Advances to IHA Final, Suhn Lee Reaches Semifinals

DES PLAINES, Ill. - The Lake Forest College handball players competed in the Illinois Handball Association Men’s Singles Tournament over the weekend (January 17-20). Forester players reached the final in three of the four divisions.

Junior Jon Iglesias (Elmhurst, Ill.) won three times in the Open Division to reach the event’s championship match, where he fell 5-21, 21-3, 11-2 to David Munson, who played on the team from 2000-04. All three of his victories were also against Lake Forest College alumni. Munson’s semifinal win came against sophomore Suhn Lee (Glenview, Ill.), who knocked off Mike Munson ’01 21-19, 21-6 in the quarterfinals.

The Foresters’ only victory in the A Division was by senior Kevin Jarvis (Chicago, Ill.) over classmate Mike Mehilos (Addison, Ill.) in the round of 16. Jarvis prevailed 15-13, 10-15, 11-9.

Senior Tom Pfeil (Philadelphia, Pa.) rattled off three straight wins before falling 21-11, 17-21, 11-1 in the B Division final. Junior James Zender (Fishers, Ind.) and sophomore Brian Connolly (Lemont, Ill.) advanced to the division’s quarterfinals and senior Tom Cirone (Chicago, Ill.) and juniors Chris Bembynista (Overland Park, Kan.) and Kushal Modi (North Little Rock, Ark.) each won once to reach the round of 16.

Sophomore Joey Urbani (Bozeman, Mont.) won four matches in a row to claim the C Division title. Along the way he defeated junior Asa Reynolds (Bethesda, Md.) in the quarterfinals and Modi in the semifinals. Freshman Pat Jarvis (Chicago, Ill.) also reached the quarterfinals before being eliminated.

Next weekend (January 24-27) the Forester women will travel to New York to participate in the United States Handball Association Women’s Classic. The men’s next competition will occur the following weekend (February 1-3) at the Circle City Tournament in Indianapolis.
