INJURIES SLOW FORESTER HANDBALL TEAM AT
SWEET SIXTEEN
A variety of injuries to the Forester men's handball
squad had an impact on the results of the Sweet Sixteen 2000 Tournament
on Friday and Saturday. Mark
O'Leary, Nate
Podrid, Brian Johnson, Jeff
Werstein, and Mike
Munson were handicapped with assorted arm ailments in addition to the
Mike Bargman (leg) and Keith
Vassall (back).
A bright spot for the Foresters was the continued
improvement of sophomore Bill Mehilos, who advanced to the finals before
losing to pro qualifier Dane Szatkowski, 21-9, 21-21. In his last four
tournaments Mehilos has been a semi-finalist twice and a finalist twice.
The "A" Division, a drop down bracket, made up
of the losing participants in the first round, was won by Chicago-land
veteran Tim Sterrett. It was a 21-13, 21-13 win over former Forester Greg
Hammond.
A week off from tournament play will be welcome
relief for the men's squad. The women get back into action this weekend
as Lake Forest will host the Illinois Handball Association's Women's Singles
Championships. Tournament matches will start at 5:00pm on Friday (Jan.
28) and will continue all day Saturday (Jan. 29) starting at 9:00am.
